... presumably in the Latitude line, without considering cost, which one would you pick?

I'm really pulled by E4200...but that ugly battery pack seem like a bummer. Plus, I don't know if Intel Core Duo U9600 is fast enough. All the others? They are bulky and I can't tell the difference.

    What's your pick?

... In Dell's strange world, E4200 (12 inch) is more expensive than anything with i7.

And...for most of the laptop work, I don't think i7 or i5 would make much of a big difference. I'd rather go for SSD drives.

ssd drive (solid state drive) is like your flash drive (or the card you use for digital camera), but made as a hard drive. It runs without spinning, which means it can run faster and with less heat.

Mostly common business staff...office, latex, data, etc, no gaming...occasionally when I am in mood, run some statistical staff.

Can't you get the SSD drives in the other latitude lines as well?

I don't need one as good as micheon does, internet, clutch bbs reading, banking and stock market, and a lot of pictures. My laptop has gotten noisy and it will heat my house in the winter.

    Thanks tinman.
For about $1k, I'll always recommend a macbook pro or Lenovo T or X series. You probably don't need as good a machine, but these would never fail you.

Macbook pro 17'' is too pricey for my needs and I do not see a 17" Lenovo. I need 17" or bigger because of bad eyes. I have an ancient 17" Toshiba now and it is adequate. It is worn out and running very hot, I keep a fan blowing on it while it is on.

If you have bad eyes, you want monitor with as low of resolution as possible.

Dell Vostro 3700 might do the trick for you. The drawback is weight, close to 6 pounds, then again, it has 17''.

With bad eyes, you could even get the MacBook Pro 13"/15" and use the Zoom function built in with the Mac. I use it all the time when I don't have glasses on and works to perfection. Simply hold down control and use two fingers on the TrackPad and it zooms in.
