Houston Dyanmo trade Brian Mullen to Colorado for Colin Clark

I realize this is old news to some but I just saw this and didn't see it posted so...

The Houston Dynamo have announced the trade of one of their most veteran players, Brian Mullan, in return for Colin Clark of the Colorado Rapids.

Allocation money and a draft pick were also involved in the deal between the two Western Conference sides.

The Dynamo are clearly looking to the future with the trade, as Clark is out for the entire season with an ACL tear in his left knee. The Rapids, for their part, may look on the acquisition of Mullan as a last-gasp chance to fight for a playoff spot.

Mullan claims two league titles to his credit, both for the Dynamo, in 2006 and 2007. At 32, however, his career is winding down.

"I've got a ton of different emotions today," Mullan said in a released statement. "I’m happy to be going home to where I'm from. At the same time, I'm nervous because I'm leaving the coach that I've been with for eight years and who I have a great deal of respect for and all the guys that have come to feel like part of my family. I will obviously also miss the fans who have supported me incredibly over the past five years."

At only 26, Clark is expected to bolster the Dynamo's 2011 efforts in midfield, which suffered with the departures of Stuart Holden and Ricardo Clark.

It really hurts to lose Mullen, who was a crucial part to those championship teams, but this is a great move for the future. Clark is a capable young mid fielder and recently made one appearance for team USA.

Dynamo also get some cap space and give up their 2013 fourth round pick in the deal.

Beginning the rebuilding process, the Dynamo have traded Brian Mullan to the Colorado Rapids for midfielder Colin Clark and allocation money, according to Major League Soccer officials.

A popular member of the Dynamo’s championship teams, Mullan has been a key and versatile midfielder who was used in a pinch as a forward. He wasn’t considered part of the club’s future, however, in part because he can likely earn at least $200,000 next season, which is a considerable amount in MLS

This year, Mullan’s salary accounts for nearly $200,000 in cap space.

The deal will be announced later today when MLS approves it.

The Dynamo will get $100,000 in return on the deal.
