I would like to respectfully disagree with Batman Jones and Bob Finn. Listen to Elvis Costello's version of "I Threw it all Away. " Also, the great British magazine Mojo put out a special commemorative Dylan issue over the summer and the included a cd of great covers of Dylan songs by people like the Charlatans, Paul Westerberg, Sonic Youth and Echo and the Bunnyman.

Yes, like smegg said, Johnny Cash recorded it on 12/17/64. It was written by M. Wilkin and D. Dill. If you'd like to get one of the albums that has the song, I'd recommend Orange Blossom Special. It has other stand out covers as well such as It ain't me, babe (a duet with June Carter Cash). The title song. Wildwood Flower, the carter family classic. And many others.

With A Little Help From My Friends...Joe Cocker
    Higher Ground...Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Everyone's A Winner....Bootsauce
    Only You...Flying Pickets
People Are Strange...Echo & The Bunnymen
Anything from either Labours of Love..UB40

    There are so many more...

I'm leaving out all the Motown/Specter/Memphis soul stuff, cause that was all basically covers of someone else...Already noted but worth repeating, Hendrix's version of Watchtower...And the Tom Jones/Art of Noise cover of Kiss cracks me up....

I did some more research on the song Elvis Costello . Knowing that Johnny Cash usually sang covers at this time, I found that it was originally sang by Lefty Frizell and "was inspired by the real life murder of a New Jersey priest combined with newspaper accounts of a woman in a black veil who regularly visited Rudolph Valentino’s grave". How cool is that.
