Today is my wife's birthday. We have someone to watch the kids and she wants Mexican Food. We're fairly new to Austin and we've been eating a lot of Maudies lately (which we like but she wants to go some place different).

Who has the best Mexican Food in Austin? Great Rita's and Salsa are a must. Location is unimportant but central is preferred.

    Thanks.

The best place I've eaten is a hole-in-the-wall place in Round Rock called Restaurant El Chef. I don't know about their ritas, but the food is fantastic. Probably not the type of place you're looking for, though...

    I'll second that.

Also, Polvos is a spinoff of Curra's (a bunch of employees left Curra's and started Polvos), so that's another recommendation.

I'm also a fan of Casa Garcias on South Lamar @ Lamar Square - the atmosphere's a bit boring, but the food is good.

Fonde San Miguel is the nicest place with the best Mexican food in Austin, and it is very classy to boot, perfect for a Birthday dinner.

DO NOT go to Matt's El Rancho. We went there when in Austin last year and it was terrible. I mean just awful.

I think that Z-Tejas is pretty good, but it's a little more Southwest than Mexican.

    polvos is a good choice.

enchiladas y mas is another good one at anderson/burnet

fonda is more upscale interior mexican not tex-mex if that matters

For a birthday, take her to Fonda. Its not tex mex though.

Trudies is fun. The food is average but their Mexican martinis are ridiculously good.

Funny you say that considering last night someone told me that Matt's El Rancho was a great place.

I'm on a budget so I suggest Taco C...jk I wouldn't want the poor to eat that sht

After hearing rave reviews about Polvo's, I decided to try it and was very disappointed. It's just like Chuy's, except with worse chips and fajitas.

I like Jorge's (like 7 blocks down from UT) and Maudi's. I guess you could consider them tex-mex places though.

Is Rosie's Tamale house still out on 71? Its a drive, but the tamales were great & it was fun to look at all the old pictures of the different famous people who had been there.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Looks like I've got a lot of Mexican places to try.

This can't be good for the diet.
