100 Meter World Record has Fallen.

Props to Montgomery. I never really did like Greene. He was never better than Michael Johnson but thinks he is.

Who else is truly amazed by the 100m record? I mean, you are the fastest human ever. How many records are like that where an extremely primal ability of humankind is given to you as the best.

If there were one sports record I wish I held, it would be the 100m. It is so hunter-gatherer-esque. Throwing a spear a long distance is not as good measure of your neanderthalism....afterall, there is no target. Running a mile is too defensive. Jumping is for neanderthals not smart enough to use a rope. But running fast works in all circumstances and makes you a better gene pool....feral females love that!!

I think Michael Johnson must have been on something...His 200 time was TOO insane. If you split it, it would have shattered the 100M record. Why would he turn down the opportunity? Why would he conveniently pull something when the Canadian challenged him in the 150M?
    Yes 9.78 is amazing...

yeah the hundred is great, but I prefer the 200. in the 200 it is also an all out sprint, and you are actually at max speed at the end. in the 100 you are still accelerating so you are not really the fastest, but rather the fastest accelerator. the 200 is the fastest.

Not actually true...It varies a little depending on the style of the sprinter, but it usually goes like this..

1-15..Coming out of blocks/getting torso verticle
    15-40..Acelerating
    40-60-..Max speed
    60-100...Decelerating.

Virtually every single 100 man is losing speed for the last 40m...Even Lewis, whose illusiory "kick" was in actuality just the result of his deceleration being less than his peers. Best at out of the blocks/achieving max speed I've ever seen was Ben Johnson, who was at max speed by 20-25 m...

I ran the 100, 200, 4x100 anchor and hurdles, and the 200 can SEEM like you're getting a better chance to acclelerate, but it's an illusion. Even if you're a long strider, or if you are a 'leaner' (someone who gradually gets verticle, therby delaying maxing out) you'll still be deccelerating by 65-70..

Breaking a 200m down into 2 100m times doesn't work, because it removes the (by far) lowest m/milsec period of any sprint: the start.

the only reason why if you split it, it would shatter the 100M record is the fact that he already had full momentum while starting on the last 100M compared to having to accelerate.

9.78 is amazing, but not any more amazing that 9.79...like really...the difference is like 100th of a second. that is not much at all...running side by side it would have seemed to be an identical tie. if there were two hippos chasing them (don't laugh, hippos can run 25 mph) they'd either both get caught or both get away. if one was 1/2 inch bigger in their waist, that's the time difference. seriously. their both super good.

Nice breakdown Macbeth. That is why the NFL uses the 40 as an acceleration scale. I would like to know what these 100 meter guys run in the 40 to compare with guys like Vick and Galloway.
