I thought this might be of interest. My vet gave me a table of pet foods and scored them based on a number of variables. I thought the Science Diet I was using was a decent brand, but they don't rate it very highly. And Beneful is one of the worst.
I'm sorry but I don't have $100 to spend on my dogs food a month. I spend enough on vet trips anyways.
Ditch the kibble and switch your dog to raw. It was the best thing i ever did. my dog has been on the raw diet for 4 months now. i've saved a lot of money and my dog has never looked, felt, or smelled better. http://www.rawlearning.com/rawfaq.html http://www.rawfed.com/myths/ http://www.rawlearning.com/ Kibble is basically fast food for your dogs. while there are certainly better brands than others, it gets quite expensive. i used to feed mine California Natural which was almost $2/lb. with raw, i'm hardly feeding him food that cost more than $1.20/lb.
I've always wanted to try raw foods, but do stores sell something like this?? I don't have time to make raw foods for 3 dogs every single day... Right now I'm feeding my dog Pro Plan dry food with a mix of those canned meats/chunks... If anyone knows Raw food please help!!!
I always fed beneful, for prolly 4 years now, been thinking of switching to a better brand. My dog is going on 8 years for his next birthday, i know he still has a good 3 or 4 years left at least but i would like for him to live as long and happy as possible.
I feed my dog Iams and I switched to that from Pedigree but it looks like that isn't a very good food or average if anything at all. I was actually in Petco last night and some of the Avoderm was on sale so I may go back and buy a bag or two while it is that cheap.
i have a 70lb lab. i feed him a daily diet of one chicken quarter leg, one chicken thigh, a couple of chicken hearts and a piece of beef liver. i prepare everything on a Sunday evening, one serving in a plastic grocery fruit bag, and freeze it. every afternoon i'll thaw it for an hour and then feed it to him. preparation really only takes about 15 minutes. once a week i'll feed him fish or pork. it seems like a lot of work, but once you're used to it, it's not a big deal. you'll need a freezer though to store all that food.
So you don't cook those meats at all, straight raw from the bag? Hmmm might try it but my dogs like it cooked, I don't know if they'll go for the raw stuff..
NO COOKING! Cooking it is actually bad for the dog. It destroys the nutrients and harden the bones. they're likely more to choke on cooked bones. It must be raw. join this yahoo group. they are very helpful. there are a lot of beginning raw feeders on there. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/
I actually did try raw feeding once and my dog loved it but it gave him the squirts something awful. I mean he was pooping anywhere and everywhere he was so I switched back to a bagged food. I have a 12 lb miniature dachshund so he would eat as much as the 70 lb lab, right? What about things like salmonella, e coli, etc.?
Dog's stomachs are very sensitive to new food they're introduced. If you're even changing brands, its a good idea to mix both brands of dog food the first week into their bowl and gradually put less portions of their old dog food with their new food until all they're eating is the new dog food. I feed my dog this brand. The name is ridiculous but its just as good as Wellness and Blue Buffalo dog food but about 10 bucks cheaper. I buy it at Tomlinson's in Austin. Lots of meat and good vegetables without all the corn in the kibble like with Purina. As for how much you should feed your dachshund, according to this website you should feed your dog no more than 3/4 cups of food a day.
We give our dogs Blue Buffalo (which actually gets an A+, woo hoo!). My doberman has bad skin allergies and the white fish and oatmeal version of Blue is the only brand that we've found that doesn't make him break out. My wife works at a vet clinic and did an allergy test on him. That made it a little easier to isolate the problem.
how long was he on raw? usually in the beginning, they're detoxing trying to get rid of the crap they've been digesting with kibble. after a while if it's still squirts, you would need to increase the bone amount. more bone in diet equals harder stools. i don't know why a 12 lb dog would eat as much as a 70 lb one. you supposed to feed 2-3% of body weight so in your case it's about a quarter of a pound of food a day. salmonella and e coli don't affect dogs when it comes to raw foods. http://rawfed.com/myths/bacteria.html you're more likely to get affected with e coli from kibble. think about all the kibble recalls there have been.
Wow I'm so glad you asked this. My 8 year old dog has been fed beneful form awhile now. Probably over 4 years. My dog has had bad allergies but not for the full 6 years Ive had her. She bites her paws and scrathes like crazy which are signs of allergies. On Tuesday I finally looked into it and found out that beneful is one of the worst dogfoods for pets with allergies.I fed my dog the last scoop of beneful in the bag this morning and am going to try a better brand today.
Haven't seen the link yet but I'm sure the brand I feed my dogs isn't rated high. Its old Roy from Kroger made by disney. Cheap. Like $13 for 50lbs
