ooops, bad example, lol, forgive my addled brain. Say you make 11 of those shots. 11/14= .786 fg% Whereas you were just as efficient in terms of points as if you had made 12 of those 15: 12/15 = .8 fg%
By the way, for those who don't know the TS% formula: PTS / (2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA)) So, say someone when 6/15 (bad shooting night), but shot 7 free throws (made 6) and 3 of the 6 makes were 3-pointers. So, he had 3*3 + 2*3 + 7 = 22 points. Plug 'n chug: 22 / (2 * (15 + 0.44 * 7)) = 22 / 36.16 = 60.8% Despite the iffy 40% FG%, the TS% which factors in free throws and 3-pointers shows a healthy 60.8%. This is Kevin Martin to the T.
He's a good player who deosn't effect the game with his scoring. I like martin, but i think alot of people have been brainwashed by the effeciency like walks in baseball. Its one thing for lead off hitters or barry bonds to draw a walk, but at some point, you will face great pitching and have to swing your way off the island like the dominican brothers will say. In the playoffs were the true measure comes in, I don't know how effective martin is or will be since he's not a star caliber player. One would like to think it just carries over, but it doesn't or seem like it doesn't. I guess we will see soon.
haha it doesnt take a genius to decide you would rather have 4 players that will go down as all time greats at what they did over martin .. i dont think that is the point though .. the point is he is in some elite company .. and unlike brent (the one we got neway) he isnt just gonna park outside and shoot jumpers ..
what's changed? he never was that's what. over rated from the start. and it is obvious that adelaman is just high on Sac players because of relationships there. we are becoming the "old" updated Sac Kings. Martin = over rated. Bmiller= once was, now done. we are in trouble
I agree that Martin doesn't seem like the kind of player who would be a big time playoff performer. But when you have a roster that is deep with talent -- and I think the Rockets are as deep as they ever were in recent memory -- that isn't as big of an issue. Martin will have a big game here and there, so will Brooks, Scola, and Yao. It may be enough to win a few series. The Lakers are still the heavy favorite, but at this stage I don't think there is one other team who would have a decided advantage over us.
No it really isn't. Martin hasn't done anything to put any of his previous team's "over the hump"....I don't see why he would suddenly be able to do so now. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a nice player.....slightly overpaid for what he does but still a very nice player. He'll do well when you put him in positions to succeed but I for one never thought "We are gonna win a Championship" when he was acquired. Just my opinion.
More important... having Luol Deng in place of Martin isn't all of a sudden gonna make the Rockets favored over the Lakers.
Thats true, but i trust deng more than i do martin in the playoffs based on what i've seen since both have been in the league. Thats not to say either would put the rockets over the top because i think even with yao, the lakers actually expose the team more. Anytime they need a basket, its going to be kobe with pick and roll and yao will be involved and they get great looks at the basket. On the other end, they play him straight up for the most part. So what becomes the rockets advantage is the speed and quickness of brooks which has always hurt the lakers. Deng is just another guy who can defend his position. When the rockets play la,kobe will rest guarding shane and artest will post martin. So in the end, the rockets arent beating la anyway, but having a guy 2 yrs younger might buy the team more time.
You didn't actually address anything I wrote in my post. So what am I supposed to do now? ..... To put in a simpler way what I wrote before, his previous team wasn't anywhere near the hump, so the question of him putting them over never arose.
He's known for shrinking in 4th quarters. When the intensity and physicality of the game ramps up, it hurts him more than most.
Uhh...Kevin Martin, no. To be serious, I think most of us have a fair understanding of who Kevin is for the Rockets. Dependable in many ways, but probably not going to save us (if need be) come the 4th quarter. When he goes MIA.
Known by who? I took a look at his "clutch" stats on 82games.com and he seemed fine in several prior seasons-- drew fouls, scored the points, etc. Was terrible with Rockets last year in "clutch" minutes but that's a small sample size (frankly, all "crunch time" stats are based on small sample sizes). The thing about Martin is that it's a little hard to guess at what he will be on a good team because he's been on bad to terrible ones in recent seasons and the post-Adelman Kings environment really doesn't breed good habits for anybody. Can he be cleansed of these bad habits? We'll see.
I haven't looked at the stats. I've read some comments from Kings fans and one of their big criticisms was that he disappeared a lot in 4th quarters.
