On a side note, did anyone see the ceremonies today? They had a couple of trumpet players play one of the worst renditions of "Taps" I have ever heard. It was a call and answer and the second trumpet was a quarter step flat. You got to break out Wynton Marsalis for that. It truly tainted, for me, what should have been a mournful salute to those that died. I could have done better. Bet me!!!
Funny you mention that. That was my FIRST concert experience way back in April of 1991 at The Summit. Suicidal Tendencies opened up for the Ryche that night (they opended up with "You Cant Bring Me Down") Strange that was over 11 years ago. They played the entire Mindcrime album on their Building Empires tour in '91 and I remember being mesmorized by the top notch stage presence and vocal range of Geoff Tate. Probably one of the most talented and underrated progressive metal bands of their era.
They played a bunch of inspirational songs today on 97.9 the BOX... "Today I didn't even have to use my A/K, I have to say it was a good day" I swear they did!
The "Fortunate Son" ad is for Wrangler, I believe. I had the exact same reaction as a lot of you. However, I don't remember ever hearing those non-short-bashing lyrics in "Short People" -- what I though was the chorus went something like "Don't want no short people / Don't need no short people / Don't want no short people round here." Is it misunderstood because of the double negative? (Not to imply that Jeff's wrong -- I haven't heard the song in forever.) CNNSI's Jon Wertheim reported that before their U.S. Open semifinal matchup, Venus Williams and Amélie Mauresmo entered the court to Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name" (warning -- explicit lyrics and subject matter; not appropriate for post-9/11 airplay, as per Clear Channel). A few years back, the NFL had a commercial featured Jim Brown, Franco Harris, Edgerrin James, etc. to the tune of Ani DiFranco's "32 Flavors". Misused? Probably. Misrepresented? I don't think so -- I think they played the entire first verse of the song, including "I am a poster girl with no poster." The local '80s station (which my officemate plays during work) had 9/11-themed programming, ranging from the overtly patriotic (the 9/11 remix of "God Bless the USA") to the mis-used ("We Are The World," "Pink Houses," snippets of "Born in the USA" in the station promos). They also had their regular programming thrown in, so I was subconsciously trying to find messages in those songs. "Freeze-Frame"? "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life"? I hope not. On the other hand, the AAA station played Ben Harper's "Burn to Shine" and Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" back-to-back on the drive home.
