I think part of the problem (if it was shut down due to financial reasons) with Angelika was it was in downtown. Nobody really wants to go to downtown to hang out other than Main Street on the weekend. If Angelika was in Midtown, I could see it having great business.

Someone should open one on Washington, Midtown, or Rice Village.

But I think people just don't go out to movies that much, and if they do, they want stadium seating and huge screens. It was just kinda outdated, although I still enjoyed going there.

I also see a lot of mainstream movie theaters shutting down or on the verge of it.

That's a shame. At U of H, used to take the 30 or 77 to Walker and San Jacinto, then trek to the Angelica to watch "The Contender," "The Ninth Gate" "Our Lady of the Assassins" and I think "The Patriot." I had no sense of direction but I'm pretty sure it was the closest theatre to campus that I could get to without taking a bunch of transfers, or interacting and forming friendships with people who had cars. The first Thanksgiving after college when I had a ride, I high-tailed it out of house in Seabrook down to the Angelika to watch "Far From Heaven."

It's because most of the younger generation would rather spend 10 dollars to wear silly glasses and watch killer fish that belong in the Sci-fi channel, rather than enjoy films with purpose, mystery and in the case of spanish films, intimate nudity.

I'm going to miss that place. Are all of them closing? I know there is one in dallas..

They did play Bollywood movies sometimes.
I think the most recent one was 'Kites'

No more Cheap Date Nights: movie and popcorn for $7 on Mondays. :(

I don't even know what that means.

They hardly have any screens and don't get everything. For example, I want to see Centurion. Where is that playing near me?

Oh, hey, look, only the Angelika. :(

To be fair, people in LA can go watch film because they have a lot of free time (no jobs).

Not accurate. Oil money actually built whatever large scale arts and theater exists in Texas, not to mention helps prop up one of the biggest higher ed systems in the country tax free. Don't forget that alot of those wildcatters were Ivy grads who came down and wondered where all the culture was. Between that and NASA, Texas might be the luckiest damn state in the Union, no doubt in the Confederacy.

Hold your breath, Houston. Help is on the way. When all is said and done, you will be happier with what you will soon have in that venue.

    Aint that the truth.

I really hate seeing things like this happen. This is like the well written TV show that get cancelled cuz it doesnt have good ratings, and in its place will be some common demonitor reality show with a bunch of talentless hacks that draws more viewers.
