I think if you're trying to ease into intelligent stuff without initially being bored or scared off, I would personally like to recommend the History Channel series "The Presidents." 30 minute to hour long episodes about every single American President. I'd also advise you to turn to PBS around 5:00 pm every night and try to catch both Nightly Business Report and the PBS News Hour. Also, go to Netflix and get the latest season of Frontline, American Experience and all the Ken Burns documentaries: but the Civil War, The West, Baseball and The War in particular.

48 Hours. Intervention. Countdown with the homie Keith. And...(guilty pleasure) America's Dumbest.... I laugh every Saturday night during that show. Of course, this topic is too subjective. At least you're not claiming Jersey Shore is the best.
Seems like you watch done of the crime investigation one's which are awesome. If you like that you can watch cold case files or FBI files those are some of my favorite shows. I just saw them from the jutin.tv channel "criminology" and you can catch them on youtube as well.
Whale Wars It should be nominated for every award in the book. And next season will be even more fascinating. When a Japanese whaling boat gets so infuriated with what you are doing that they ram your boat, this is pretty much should be emmy nominated show for sure. When a crew men of said ship that was sunk, the ady Gil, decides that he is going to use a jet ski to board the offending boat in the dead of night by using the boats wak to propel himself on to the boat to "arrest" the captain of that ship, this might be the best reality show, possibly ever. Anyone not watching whale wars, start!
Animal Planet. But I think it replays on other networks too. You can catch the first 2 seasons at netflix and they are pretty good. But this season has been by far the best and most interesting season. This show is going beyond reality tv at this point. Think about it: now I am not saying that these guys are right for what they do or wrong for what they do, but when you board a boat that isn't even apart of the same country or abides by the same laws that you do and get sent to prison in a foreign country like Pete Bethune did, and you got protesters calling for your head, maybe TV isn't the place for this. Especially reality tv. Fortunately they didn't kill the guy, but he wasn't sure they wouldn't do it. You just have to watch Whale Wars to know the length at which this battle has taken place between these guys and the Japanese vessel to understand the danger he's put himself in.
