From the looks of it, his mechanics would only need a tweak. He's got a year to work on it...hopefully the Nats see it the same way and get someone to work with him on it.

I've only seen 3 of his starts. His mechanics seem inconsistent to me, but I am a very untraded eye. The article seems to say the same thing. Looking at the slow motion video, you really see a lot of strain on the elbow. But, I don't know what slow motion video of Nolan Ryan's elbow looked like.

If he turns into John Smoltz (a hall of fame caliber pitcher), that would obviously be great. It just shows how much potential he has, that turning out to be John Smoltz is less than his ceiling.

At the end of the day, the human body is not meant to throw a baseball....

it's a shame. Should i feel bad that I was just waiting for an injury to happen because i thought it was only a matter of time?

DD, nothing wrong with throwing a baseball. It's throwing it 100MPH dozens of times every few days.

yep, strasburgs motion looked a lot like kerry woods, if he doesnt change that, he might have arm problems his entire career.

my older boy is in love with the game. wonder where he got that?

we go to Baseball USA sometimes for lessons with Gerald Young.

i was talking about select ball with him...asking what he thought....

he said, "man, i wasn't playing more than 30-40 games a season until someone was paying me to do it. these guys are killing the arms of young pitchers. guys in college getting tommy john surgery tells you all you need to know. that was a surgery for old men when i was playing."

With a guy like Strasburg I am wondering if they rushed him into the majors too fast. If he had problems with his mechanics shouldn't they have spent more times in the minors to iron that out?

That is insane. His pitch count has been closely monitored and scrutinized since the day the Nats drafted him. His motion must have destroyed his arm.

Chris Carpenter has done damn well after his TJ surgery. Hope Stras comes back soon. Baseball needs him.

Eh. It'll slow down his development, but TJS is usually just a speedbump in a talented pitcher's career. Kerry Wood and Prior both had shoulder problems, which are the career-killers.

That said, if the Nats are smart, after Strasburg recovers from surgery they'll Halladay him and retool his mechanics. It's never a good sign when a pitcher lifts their elbows above the level of their shoulders.

I think this is a big piece of evidence that it's not how many pitches you throw, but your mechanics that will get you hurt. He's been babied as much as can be and he still got hurt.
