With the Bobcats and Erick Dampier at an apparent stalemate in "waive and re-sign" contract negotiations, I came up with the following Carmelo trade that just might work for all teams involved: Houston gets: Carmelo Anthony, Eduardo Najera Charlotte gets: Jared Jeffries, Mike Harris, Alexander Johnson, 2011 2nd rounder, cash Denver gets: Chase Budinger, Jordan Hill, Chuck Hayes, Erick Dampier, 2012 Knicks pick Why Houston does it: The Rockets get Carmelo. Need I say more? Okay, I will. They also take back Najera using the $3M Landry trade exception (actually, for technical reasons, this would be a separate trade). With Najera owed $3M this season and $2.75M the following year, the Rockets would likely look to dump him at the deadline using more cash and a pick. The best part? Houston comes away still holding onto the 2011 pick swap rights with the Knicks. Why Charlotte does it: Now that is looks like Dampier will not re-sign with the Bobcats after he is inevitably waived, Charlotte is looking to deal him while not going (back) above the luxury tax threshold. While Jeffries is no world-beater, he is a good defender and a clear upgrade from Najera. In order to get the Bobcats to eat Jeffries's $6.88M salary, the Rockets would need to send the 2011 second rounder (the higher of the Rockets' or Clippers' pick) and cash to Charlotte and also eat Najera's two years. The Bobcats would likely waive at least one of the non-guaranteed contracts of Harris and Johnson. Why Denver does it: They get two nice young player (Budinger and Hill), a potential lottery pick, a solid bench defender (Hayes) and--perhaps most importantly--a TON of salary cap relief with the non-guaranteed contract of Dampier. With this trade, the Nuggets would save a whopping $23.5M in salary and tax next season. This deal saves Denver so much money that they would be in position to easily sneak below the luxury tax threshold with another move. It is the tremendous salary cap relief that may lessen the "draft pick burden" on the Rockets, allowing Houston to keep that 2011 pick swap. Just thinking out loud.
No way we should get Rubio. From what I've seen of him, he's just a spoiled kid. Talented? Maybe but not worth the money or trade. I agree with you on CP3 though. He's not coming, even if he's offered a lot of money. At this point, he just wants a place where he's will be assured a ring and Hou can't guarantee that. Also, I'm not sure if I want him here. He's starting to get spoiled too. Granger--not too thrilled about that either. Iggy definitely sounds good though.
You just get out of jail? You sure are posting a lot all of the sudden. Jk I'm bored. As far as CP3 no one can guarantee him anything, hell Miami or lakeshow can't guarantee anything. I wanted Iguodala, watching him in the worlds pre games, his jumper has gone away completely. He muscled up bigtime this offseason. Still a beast defender and on the break. Granger hasn't looked all that impressive either.
CHA cannot do it. If they do, it means they traded Chandler for JJ, 2nd rd pick and right to pay Carroll millions. They kill MJ if they do it. They kill.
Bima, Wouldn't Charlotte need to take on more salary to make it work? I thought Dampier salary is about $12 million, but Jeffries, Harris, & Johnson together make about $8.5 million which is less than 75% of Dampier contract? Anyway I agree with you that we will likely need a 3rd team with cap room to help Denver reduce their salary. They do not want to pay $13 million in lux. tax if they trade Carmelo and start to re-build.
Nah, teams can always take back less salary. The problems usually occur when teams are acquiring significant salary. Then, the receiving team must send out enough salary to be within the salary restrictions.
non-guaranteed contract of Dampier? So basically they GAVE Dallas Chandler for relief. If they werent planning on keeping him for that instant relief then they get a 2nd round....hmm dont know whats more valuable for MJ.
If we are willing to eat a Birdman's contract and pick up a 1 year head case (hey we did the Artest thing for 1 year) then I think you could get Melo for a better price. Trading Andersen's contract and renouncing Jeffries and Battier will allow them to get under the tax next year. Taking JR out of their lineup - even though he's expiring - is a big bonus. Then having Martin, a pick and options to pick up Hill if he plays well, gives them a chance to make forward decisions under the new regime and not pay tax while doing it. Melo + Andersen + Smith = Battier + Jeffries + Martin + Hill + 2012 Rocket pick. We keep the 2011 pick swap option we have with the Knicks and the Knick's 2012 pick. ie. We still have a nice pick every year. Brooks / Lowry / Ish (reserve) Lee / Smith / Taylor (reserve) Melo / Budinger / Harris (reserve) Scola / Hayes / Patterson Yao / Miller / Andersen Good mix of O and D on team 1 and 2 - an even deeper team IMO.
The Nugs can't get renounce players to get under the cap unless the player has a non-guaranteed contract. You have to do something like what we did for Andersen or Ariza to get cap relief. We could also use or TE to get Anderson or Smith in a separate deal, then keep Jeffiries/Battier. The downside to that is we take on more salary in lux tax territory. So we'd be paying double for a player we don't even really want (IMO). And has Denver actually said they want to get rid of Birdman?
Denver gets Battier Martin Harris Hill Nocioni seperate TE deal for Birdman Phillie gets Jeffries Johnson Bud J.R. Smith Houston gets Melo Birdman Iggy Distribute picks as seen fit to sweeten deals. With this trade you not only get players that we are after, but also help Phillie to move Nocioni's contract and help Denver get rid of J.R..
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=23u8s5q I wanted to scream automatically when i saw who we got and who posted, lol. but the more and more i look at it, it doesnt seem to far fetched. you still have pieces that can be moved around to sweeten up the deal for both sides (ie Pat and Brooks)
Sorry - I meant they could renounce them at the end of next season. 2010-11 is a LT done deal for the Nuggets unless a true miracle comes in. They can keep Birdman if they want, but it costs them double. Smith is only here for 1 year but no matter - our roster salary is going to be toast if we get Melo assuming we resign Brooks and Yao.
That is not bad... I'd keep Harris and/or Johnson since we lose all SFs except for Melo. I doubt either of those would be a deal breaker. I would expect a pick (maybe 2) heading Phillie's way. Brooks / Lowry / Ish (reserve) Iggy / Taylor Melo / Harris / Johnson Scola / Hayes / Patterson Yao / Miller / Andersen lose some depth at SG and SF but that is a nice starting 5. Struggle to get a 9 man rotation unless Taylor or Harris steps up.
you can give up brooks for holiday, also added in, which is what I posted and also add pat pat but I would hope that'd be enough to keep someone young on the team
