Melo has all the leverage as he can veto any trade by refusing any extension with interested teams. The longer Denver holds out, I think the less trade value Melo has. As teams have now seen what the Cavs and Toronto were left with. Melo for→ 2Pat + Hill (2009 8th pick) + Taylor + Battier (expiring) + Harris + Johnson (non-guaranteed) + either 2010 or 2011 NY pick only, not both. * Nuggets reduced team salary by $4,521,172 (save $9,042,344 incl. tax) 3 prime assets (2Pat, Hill, NY pick) & $9M savings for a superstar. I think that's fair. The last superstar trade I recall that wasn't a heist was: Shaq for Butler + Odom + Grant (filler) + future first (low pick) Melo has all the leverage as he can veto any trade by refusing any extension with interested teams. The longer Denver holds out, I think the less trade value Melo has. As teams have seen what the Cavs and Toronto were left with. I think Brooks becomes a keeper for now. Rockets possibly now in play for CP3. Without Collison they'll need a PG in return should that come about. Brooks, Lowry, (Mills or Smith) Martin, Lee Melo, Budinger Scola, Jeffries, Hayes Miller, Yao Billups, Lawson, Carter Afflalo, Smith, Taylor Harrington, Battier, Balkman Martin, 2Pat, Williams Nene, Hill, Andersen The Nets can offer Favors but would Melo agree to an extension with the same team that won only 12 games last season? This isn't like the Knicks who changed their franchise by adding Amare. Also if a Nets trade goes down in the off-season they are likely left with Humphries and May as the PFs.
Would the Rocket be allowed to trade for Carmelo in one deal and trade their TE for J.R. Smith in a separate deal? That could allow the Nuggets to get under the LT (potentially saving them 12 million). Perhaps the Rockets would agree to that to sway the Nuggets into giving them Carmelo. I'm not sure if that's allowed though.
Trade rule for TEs: TE + $100k Ariza TE is $6.3M, ie can be traded for up to $6.4M in return JR Smith's contract is $6.7M
HoopsHype has his salary at 6.03 million, ShamSports has it as 6.75 million. I guess I'll trust ShamSports figure. Can we combine the 6.3 TE with our other TE?
Nope, just like you can't combine it with a player... But yes to your previous question, we could do one transaction for Melo, and use the trade exception for a separate one. If JR Smith makes too much, you could for example accept Birdman for "nothing". Edit: Just to also address your above post, can't be Al Harrington -- they just signed him this offseason! He can't be traded till Dec. 15. That could work at the trade deadline though.
Al Harrington on a long contract is not appetizing at all. Not at all the kind of player that fit Morey's pattern. I would imagine the Rockets would prefer taking Chris Andersen... or to find a third team who will take Harrington and whose bad contract we'd eat.
I would love, love, love this trade. Getting Melo AND keeping CBud & Hayes AND one of our 1st round picks. It does seem a bit one sided in our favor. If there is any way we can pull off the Melo trade and keep CBud, that is all kinds of win.
Given the Rockets' overwhelming excitement on draft night, I think I'd rather give up Chase than Patterson, especially if it is for the 26-year-old Melo, who plays the same position as Chase. While I'd hate to give up Hayes, I'd be more inclined to offer the following for Anthony: Chase Budinger Jordan Hill Chuck Hayes Jared Jeffries (expiring) Alexander Johnson (non-guaranteed) Mike Harris (non-guaranteed) Both "Knicks picks" (meaning the 2011 pick and the HIGHER of the Rockets' 2012 picks) My guess is that Morey would rather have the #6 player on his 2010 draft board (Patterson) than just the CHANCE at no better than the #6 pick in 2012.
wouldnt the 2012 pick have to be the Knicks pick? Since the 2011 is still technically the Rockets pick w/ the option to swap with the Knicks (and by all indications the Rockets should do better than the Knicks next season Melo or no Melo) and couldnt trade two successive first round picks in a row? I am not sure if having it be an option of the higher (and by higher i mean whichever team picks first between the two) of the two is a loophole thats acceptable?
I'd also take that. I guess I'm just expressing some 'homer' love for Chase. When it comes down to a question of Hill or PatPat, I'm in the camp to keep PatPat. Bima, if your proposed trade happens, do you see DM getting a back up SF with one of our TE? If so, what players are on the radar?
No. The rule is that a team cannot be without a first round pick in two consecutive future drafts. As long as the Rockets have secured the rights to an additional first round pick, they are free to trade their own pick. Now, it is possible that the conditions on the pick would need to be that if the Knicks' pick is in the top-5, then the obligation is deferred until 2013, with the same benefits (higher of the Knicks' or Rockets' pick). Probably not, at least not a $6M player. With my proposed trade above, the Rockets would vault themselves further above the luxury tax, basically where they were after the Lowry, Scola and Miller signings. I doubt Les pays $12M for a backup SF, nor would I expect him to do so. More likely, they either trade for a decent backup (think Quinton Ross) or find a cheap free agent still available.
Random trade: Yao+Battier+Budinger+2012 #1st pick for Melo and Anderson TE for JR Smith Denver save the money and can try a Yao-Billups traditional lineup. Yao/Nene Martin/Harrington Battier/Bugdinger Afflalo/Carter Billups/Lawson Rockets get a star and keep their back court untouched. Miller/Anderson Scola/Hill Melo/JR Smith Martin/Lee Brooks/Lowry Denver gets better if Yao can play. Rockets will have to look for their starting center but Morey can do it with that many 1st round picks.
Like the audience would chant on the Jerry Springer show: YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK! YOU SUCK!
http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=187621 somene in this forum thought of a trade for both our young pf, hill and patterson, chase, our 2011 swap with NY, our NY 2012 pick and our 2013 for melo and birdman we are in full win now mode if we do this trade. We lose our promising young prospects but get a veteran PF defender in anderson and our main target melo AND we don't lose any key contributors except battier, who they can buyout. What do you guys think? Brooks/lowry/ martin/lee Melo/battier(if bought out) Scola/birdman Yao/Miller We are still 2 deep in every position this way. Could also use hayes sparingly, thought I think birdman has more size, and is a better shotblocker while hayes is overall a better defender. Can't go wrong with neither but birdman could be our defensive big vs centers.
