It seems to me that most of the anti-flopping sentiment among NBA fans is when a defender just drops to the ground with little or no contact. But personally, I find it more annoying when an offensive player plows into the paint, run into the defender, flails his arms and draws a foul.

I say this because the rules in the NBA today is already so geared towards the offense. There's no handcheck. There's barely any traveling or moving screen calls. Any contact initiated by the offensive player is never called an offensive foul. The rules pretty much destroys any ability for a defender to actually defend. So why go the extra mile? What's the point of purposely drawing contact and cry foul like it's the other guy's fault? Why flail your arms like an idiot and scream bloody murder when the defender gets all ball or basically all ball?

It's gotten to the point where although the NBA promotes offense, they don't really promote fun basketball. What's the fun in a 110-108 game when both sides shoot 30+ fts?

I'm personally more annoyed with offensive flopping. Half the time the offensive player isn't even attempting to score, but rather just looking for the slightest contact. I especially get annoyed when a player flops, doesn't get the call, and then proceeds to argue the call.

    Offensive flopping.

It's mostly the bigger stars (Kobe) who basically EXPECT to get a call and start whining if a defender is within 2 feet of them and they miss a shot.

Blame Stern and the NBA for enabling them by doing it often enough that they expect it.

the player that dribbles the ball right into a screen and then falls back acting like the screener walked into him.

    Offensive is worse.

I feel like most of the time when a defender flops it's to embellish or sell a foul that, technically speaking, has already been committed.

Most of the time when an offensive player flops, it's to create the illusion that there was a foul when there wasn't.

I voted for defensive flop, but people here are making a pretty good argument for the offensive flop being worse.

There's a fine line between defensive flopping and good defense in most cases. For one, anyone who has played basketball at an organized level has been taught how to take a charge. You always fall down or you won't get the call, no matter how hard you're hit. Refs know this too. Besides that, it's the safe way to take a charge, If you try and hold your ground, there will be a lot more injuries. Now flailing your arms is too much, and reacting to an inadvertant elbow, IMO, but falling down at the slightest bit of contact doesn't bother me too much.

Offensively, there really shouldn't be too much conscious thought about drawing a foul, IMO. Any contact should do and there is no need to exagerate.

The worst flops for me are the Derek Fisher flops - ie on defense, running into a screen, and then grabbing his face and falling to the floor.

The only time I've pulled for the Jazz was after seeing Fisher do this 3 times to Milsapp/Boozer in last years playoffs.

One time he even grabbed Milsapp's arm and tugged it out so that it looked like Milsapp was throwing an elbow.

This may not always be a flop, but I hate the offensive charge call when someone passes the ball, it's clearly out of his hands, and a defender steps in front of the passer at the last second and falls down.

To me if the ball is gone from the passer, it should be a no-call.

No way, Wade actually drives into multiple defenders and most of the time he is actually fouled... unlike Kobe and many others... He does get a lot of calls though, just like any other "superstar"

Very funny. Wade shot a record FT in finals for a reason. Kobe on the other hand, never got any handcheck call in those Celtics finals.

Offensive flopping is way worse. It shows you can't play physical and have to resort to the referees bailing you out by flailing around like a pansy, ala Malone.

Flopping is floppping; it is part of the game.

it is no different than a baller fakes left, then goes right.

I've said it many times in the past. Offensive flopping is by far worse than defensive flopping.

On defense, you have to at least have good position to flop. Most of the times (except for some blatant drama done by punks like Kirilenko) defensive flopping is just selling the contact that was real.

On offense, a lot of the contacts are fabricated by the offensive player.

    And this too

You forgot to add the option in the pole for "Flops, what is a flop? A foul?". The poster named Prince would thank you for this.
