I certainly don't consider him a traitor, but I do think it's really stupid that he's allowed to play for a national team other than team USA.
I doubt Chris Kaman had a chance at earning a spot on Team USA, nor tilts the balance in world basketball towards Germany.
If he was offered both a Team USA and Team Germany spot and picked Germany, then yes he would be traitor. He was not offered a spot on Team USA (not originally at least) and he just wants to play.
Hasn't he played for Germany in the past? Long before he ever would have been picked for the USA's squad? Once you've played for one country in international competition, you're ineligible to play for a different country. That's why Tim Duncan doesn't play for the Virgin Islands.
Are you saying they don't have a National Basketball Team (they do, by the way. So does Puerto Rico)? Or are you just being a testicle and arguing semantics?
Was Duncan a traitor? Was Hakeem a traitor? Kaman playing for Germany is the same as those two scenarios. He never thought he'd ever be able to represent his country, so he adopted his 'other' country. The ties certainly don't run as deep, but he has a connection nonetheless and made it happen for the love of the game.
Duncan was from the US Virgin Islands, so he's always been a US citizen. Hakeem had lived in the US for many years and had no plans of returning to Nigeria, so he applied for US citizenship. Kaman is not from Germany, has not lived in Germany, and is not planning on moving to Germany. He became a citizen only so he could play for their national team. I still don't think it makes him a traitor, though. I just think it's stupid that the rules allow it.
