I wasn't around back when this happened, so could anyone give me the details on the Stoudamire trade such as who we offered and what killed the deal? I would really appreciate it.

I am not totally sure but it had to do with Walt and Stoud coming here for Elie, Willis and another player. Rumor has it that Grunwald leaked it merely to get a better offer. The Rox keep very quiet on their possible trades, so they do not worsen any team chemistry. Boy did Mario put on a gigantic pout. He did not play the same for us after that. Also, supposedly Calvin leaked it directly to Mario. Can anyone confirm that?

Oh man, you're bringing back some bad memories. Wasn't the deal breaker (stupidly enough) Rodrick Rhodes? Mario was pissed! He took it personally.

one simple trade. Could've changed things dramatically.

-If we trade for Damon and Walt, then Portland doesn't trade for them. They still search for a PG, and don't trade for Pippen, or if they do, in a much different package than the one given.

Original deal: (god it pains me to know this almost went down!)

    Kevin Willis
    Maloney
    Ellie

    for

    Stoudamire
    Walt Williams
    Zan Tabak

What a trade it would have been! Bags were packed, everything was ready to go. But it was leaked, Toronto rescinded, and waited for a better offer (after all, we were about to rape them there).

Supposedly the Rockets upped the offer to five or more players, the three above plus Matt Bullard and I believe another, maybe Price. Rumor had it that Toronto wanted Rhodes (who was showing flashes of defensive brilliance at the time) and Houston balked.

Perhaps it was Rhodes that was the deal breaker, but I think the deal breaker was that Houston simply couldn't match the other offers.

Houston slumped horribly as chemistry became horrible. Ellie must have said something awful, Rudy benched his ass big time and was not welcome to return come the end of the season. If that trade had gone down... man.

But hell, here we are with Francis/Mobes/Shandon. Not too shabby.

Alright, thanks for the info everyone. Another question, how good was Stoudamire back then? I know he won rookie of the year, but what were his stats?

    KK,
Well he played two full seasons in Toronto.
First year he averaged 19.0 points and 9.3 assists a game.
Second year he averaged 20.2 points and 8.8 assists a game.

Anybody want to discuss the other Toronto trade that should have been made?

As much as not doing that trade set the Rockets back in terms of rebuilding, having one of the all-time greats retire having played his entire career in Houston is something that has been too long in coming.

    With apologies to Calvin Murphy.

Don't forget all the draft picks we were offering. We were giving up the draft for like two or three years.
Also while everybody said Roderick Rhodes was the deal breaker lets remember the source. They reported ot on TNT and odds are that means it was a Peter Vescey scoop. This trade is also the reason many Rocket fans don't like David Aldridge.

Yes, things worked out for the best considering Francis vs. Stoudamire today. But if the deal had gone through, we might have won the title in -- what was it, 97? And probably never had that awful Quitten fiasco.

I was very high on Rhodes at the time, too. I remember him trapping Jordan in the open court and stripping him clean, and I remember him getting something like 8 assists and 5 steals in the rookie game. And what a ballhandler! I still think we would have beaten the Jazz in the playoffs that year if Rudy had put Rhodes on Stockton at the end of game 6 instead of Maloney. If only he had worked on his jump shot....

It was the deal that would have made the Rockets clear cut favorites in the west. It would have totally sky rocketed us ahead of the pack and would have guaranteed a showdown with the Bulls in the finals.

Having Dream, Barkley, Clyde and Damon all on the same team. We probably would have lacked depth, but it would have been so much fun to watch a team like that. Stoudamire would have gone nuts thinking about who to dish the ball to.

That was the trade that would have rebuilded us and rejuvinated us all in one. But it didn't go through and we were stuck with no youth and more disappointment.

Atleast things are looking up now...

I've gotta agree with KeepKenny. At the time it seemed like the Stoudamire trade would have put us over the top, but I'm not so sure anymore. Based on the way Stoudamire has played in Portland, I think that he was way overrated while in Toronto. He could put up very good numbers on a very bad team where he could do whatever he wanted. He's been very mediocre since he got to Portland. Be glad that we didn't do that deal and sign him to an $80M deal like Portland did.

Alright guys, thanks a lot for the responses. But if we traded for Stoudamire, he would probably have the same problem he is having in Portland. Too many players to share the ball with.
