    Nowitzki Named Tournament MVP

Indianapolis, Sept. 8 -Versatile forward Dirk Nowitzki, who led Germany to its first medal ever in the event, was named Most Valuable Player of the World Basketball Championship on Sunday.

Nowitzki averaged 24.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots for Germany (6-3). In the bronze-medal victory over New Zealand on Sunday, he scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half.

Peja Stojakovic, who averaged 18.8 points to lead gold-medal winning Yugoslavia, was named to the All-Tournament Team at guard along with Argentina's Emanuel Ginobili, who averaged 16.9 points before suffering a sprained ankle in the semifinals.

The All-Tournament forwards were Nowitzki and Pero Cameron of New Zealand, the burly big man who averaged 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the fourth-place finishers.

China's Yao Ming, who averaged 21.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.25 blocked shots and shot an astounding 75 percent from the field (55 of 73) was the center of choice.

No USA team members. Go Yao!

If China's team had done better, I think Yao may have been named MVP. His numbers are pretty similar to Dirk's but I'm sure he shot a LOT better. But when you team isn't doing well, you don't get the recognition. I'm a Rocket's fan, I should know. :D

Yao making the team shows alot about how great a player he is since China only won one game.

Well even though no US players made the team. 4 out of the 5 tournament selecties play in the NBA. I don't know much about the Cameron player from New Zealand but this is a great honer for him I'm sure. Possibly they felt obligated to pick one player from the top 4 teams. if this is the case than Yao Ming's selection is that much more impressive.

Imagine if they'd gotten him the ball like he was supposed to? I think he would have avg 35 points per game, and would have been an undenyable MVP. You can say look at their record, but they probably wouldn't have lost that many games if the Chinese were like a normal team.

I wonder what ElQuesoGrande and the rest of the Yao haters have to say to this news? :p

They have been very quiet lately, unless I'm missing some deeply burried threads. :p And it's doubly hard to say Yao won't be able to handle American ball when American ball is worth 6th place in the worlds. Ouch.:( Still hard to accept that.

Well according to ElQuesoGrande, Ming has horrible fundamentals, puts the ball down to low, and has no strength and no power. OOOPS!

Dirk took 144 shots, and played a lot more minutes per game and averaged 24 pts, 8+ rbs pg, Dirk has had 4 yrs of NBA experiences, while Yao took only 75 shots, nearly half as much shots as Dirk took, and has 0 yrs of NBA experiences, yet he still managed to score 21 pts, 9+ rbs ppg with a team of below average players. Imagine a Yao with improved Stamina and strength, he would plays more minutes and took more shots, he would be definitely the leading scorer and MVP of this tournament.

From Yao's performance in this world championship tournament, we can see that Rockets have already gotten a super center in the making, a different kind of center than big Shaq. From a couple of interview scripts, we know that Yao already knew what he needs to improve once he joins the Rockets: Stamina, Strength, Rebound, blocking, Defense, Passing ability while being double-teamed. He is confident that his offensive skills is already better than most centers in the league. If the Rockets coaching team don't rush to get too much out of Yao in the 1st two yrs, and let him play around 18 minutes in the 1st yr and 25 minutes in the 2nd yr per game, and give him time to learn the American basketball culture, adjust to the NBA lifestyle - 82 games per season instead of around 30 games per season in the CBA, and let him concentrate to improve the areas where he needs to improve to become a complete center, Rockets will have a bright future. We would have our own Kobe and Shaq (Steve and Yao) in 3 yrs.

    Don't cry, Yao Ming....

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2002-09-09/1012312975.shtml

When you go back to Indi, you will have Steve Francis on the left, and Cuttino Mobley on the right, and Rudy Tomjanovich will stand behind you. You can cry now, but you are destined to come back.

    "Indi, I'll be back"....on October 30.

I'm just praying that Yao and Rudy aren't crying because all Ming gets to do is try to chase down rebounds from all the shots Steve and Cuttino are jacking up.
