Okay, I was hoping someone can logically answer this question for me without this thread deteriorating into an ugly pissing match that almost all of the threads dealing with race turn out around here.

The NAACP stands for the National Association of Advancement for Colored People, does it not??

Well, the question I have is this: isn't the term "colored people", one that is considered derogatory?? I know that I have heard that it is, but maybe I imagined that. If it is considered derogatory, then why in the hell has the NAACP not changed the name of their organization to something that is not considered derogatory?? That is my question.

You think they should change it to:

NAAAA--National Association of Advancement for African-Americans

    naaaaa, I don't think that's a good name

If it is about COLORED PEOPLE, then why don't I see hispanics or asians? I only see Black people - african americans, yelling at the camera and stuff.

Its suppose to represent all noncaucasions, but it just helps those that can get Jess on the cameras, or help him extort a corporation to benefit his family and friends.

The NAACP was founded in 1909, initially as the "National Negro Committee." It was multi-racial but the multi-races were all black in descent - i.e. Hatian, African, etc, not Latino, Hispanic, Arab, etc.

The name was changed to reflect the fact that not all black people had the same skin tone AND the fact that many were from different countries even if they shared the same general appearance.

The reason they don't change their name today, I assume, is because not all blacks are African Americans not to mention the hassle it would be to change the name of an organization that is nearly 100 years old.

I assume it may be the same for LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) who have members from Spain and the Carribean, not considered part of Latin America.

Should we then refer to blacks as "colored people" from now on, instead of African-American? :)

The "Rainbow Push Coalition" essentially blackmailed (with the threat of a lawsuit) Wall Street firms into hiring people that otherwise weren't qualified for the job. I had a close friend in the human resources department at a large investment bank in New York and she had nothing but bad things to say to me privately about the situation. Publicly they adopt a different face.

Good question and the question, that is essentially the heart of this thread.

I mean if "colored people" is acceptable for the NAACP, how can it be unacceptable on other instances??

Is this similar to how it is okay for blacks or African-Americans can call themselves the n-word, but whites or any other race cannot use that term?

Someone needs to get hooked up in the bedroom. If your not shanking it becuase someone is to tight with the goodies, you need to learn how to. Either way, these threads can be filled with replys like this if you can't keep your negative comments to yourself. I don't like half the liberal views that you spew out, but I keep my comments to myself. Just the only difference between you and myself, I don't cheap shot until pushed first.

The NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization, with over 600,000 members in the fifty states and the District of Columbia, and throughout the world. The NAACP is committed to the protection of the civil, legal, political, economic and human rights of African-Americans, and other citizens of color here in the United States.

This is a statement made by Harold McDougal, Director of Washington Bureau, NAACP

    Second on the docket:

If the race card is power to Democrat politicians, it is money and power to race hustlers like Jackson and Sharpton. Once upon a time, Jackson would make demagogic harangues in inner-city communities about "racist" liquor distributors who were targeting the African American population. Budweiser is currently running commercials featuring black racial stereotypes. Ordinarily, this would be a Jackson two-fer. In the old days, Jackson attacked Anheuser-Busch for a lack of minority ownership among its distributors. But today Jesse Jackson's lips are sealed. Possible reason: Two of Jackson's sons were recently given the No. 1 Budweiser distributorship in Chicago, worth $33 million in annual revenues. And they got it, against all competitors, for almost no cash down.

Most blacks I know prefer "black". As was once said by Redd Fox, "Nobody colored me. I was born this way!" :)

There are divisions among the black community about what they prefer just as their are among the Latino and Asian communities. Most simply want to have a name of their choosing. "Colored" was a term given to multi-racial, non-European immigrants by white Americans to distinguish them from European, white immigrants like eastern Europeans, Irish and others.

They just want something that identifies them by their choice.

At the time, "colored" was the term that was most widely used. I mean, it was 1909. And, as you should know, Comic Book Guy, changing your name can cause confusion. :)

HA! :D You essentially said that the NAACP was nothing more than a way for Jessie Jackson to sue people and you call MY comments negative?

Actually, you DON'T keep your comments to yourself. Just take a glance back through the history of your 130+ posts and it doesn't take long to see a pattern emerging. You seem to get really fired up over race issues, so it is no surprise you went koo koo in this one too.

You are more than welcome to your opinion but don't expect that you won't get called on it when you say it. I just find it funny that you wigged out so quickly. You're too easy! :)
