I think millions in tax dollars spent on helping chinese prostitutes in china drink more responsibly is important.

I think almost a million of my tax dollars being spent on a joke telling robot is important.

I think over 3 million spent on a turtle crossing is important.

What a crock. Then again i'm sure this stuff happens in every administration but its ridiculous.

I guess you have to pay taxes to not find these kind of things upsetting.

Wowy-wow!...I would like to see him in congress if for no other reason than to enjoy the lulz that would ensue from his gafftastic daddy mentoring him on policy, public speaking and spelling.

Were I a tea-bagger, that video would give me a half-chub before he finished the line, "worst president ever"

    Wow...just wow!.. I mean J-WOW-wowy-wow!!!

Not surprisingly... if read up on these projects and you'll see that this video deliberately takes them out of context and purposefully distorts their objective or omits information to that end.

More playing up the short-fused "outraged tax payer" bit...

    Yawn.

OK, I looked into the smoking Blackberry one...

What this is is state funds (DC as well, maybe... see below) that were originally tobacco settlement monies but which states took over to push stimulus programs at that level. The anti-smoking groups put up a fight because that money was originally earmarked for, you know, anti-smoking efforts. So, it looks like compromises were made and when the state-level stimulus bills were passed they identified a portion of the money to go back to anti-smoking efforts. Thus, an anti-smoking group like The American Legacy Foundation (which focuses on teens) is able to do this through a "stimulus" bill with money they had access to before the stimulus bill. At least that's what it looks like regarding Ohio.

Now, the only mention of this on Recovery.gov is for a DC grant of about half that amount. It does look like they are doing some stuff with cell phones to provide access to "quitlines" and counselors, as well as providing individual visits to counselors for people who meet their threshold. Anyway, it's not clear to me if the funds come directly out of the stimulus or, if like the other states, this is part of the tobacco settlement that got mixed in because of the uniqueness of the District budget process. Maybe the DC stuff and the other stuff are 2 different pots of money? I don't know. Anyway, it's a 9 month study, so people aren't getting freebies forever.

I'll look into the other stuff as I have time.

    I did just that.

rimrocker covered the blackberry thing pretty well 2 posts up.

What is referred to as a "joke telling robot" is actually a science grant given to Northwestern University to build an Artificial intelligence machine that's appealing to the everyday student so that it would encourage students to get into the field of AI and spark interest in further development and research. So no, they're not spending 700k for the lulz.

The purpose of the "turtle tunnel" is to protect an endangered species and protect drivers on the road (I for one don't want a 10 pound turtle crashing into my windshield). And while this seems a little unnecessary, but the ultimate goal is to STIMULATE the economy, ie: CREATE jobs. The tunnel isn't going to be built by turtles, it's going to put hundreds of people to work, and that's what "stimulating the economy" really means.

Finally, and the most absurd twist job of them all, here's an excerpt pulled straight from the link provided in the video for what it calls "chinese prostitutes alcoholism assistance"

It's called scientific research, you uneducated tea-bag wielding scum.

Sigh, I always say I'm not going to get worked up over silly things anymore, but I fail every time.

Here's a funny vid to lighten up the mood:

Indeed BO, the writ of our forefathers must endure. We cannot allow the same people who seek to destroy us to mock our liberties and exploit it. If the muslims truly cared about this country, this freakin Imam yahoo would use a little more tact and think about the implications of building a muslim worship house on the soil so close to where thousands of hard working americans died at the hands of muslim extremists. This building project is not to promote sincerety and communication bw muslims and americans, it is to declare a soft victory over the american infidels and prove that america can be penetrated and destroyed subvertedly through our very own existing freedoms. To all the Patriots, which obviously does not include some of the contributing members at clutchfans, I ask you to not appease our enemy, and make no mistake about it, our enemy is the muslim extremist.

It's not at ground zero, it's two blocks away. How far away is far enough for you? Ten blocks? Twenty blocks? Outside of NYC? Outside the US? Given the rest of your post, I'm pretty sure it's the last one.

And by the way, some of the victims were Muslim, too.

You know, the money the government spends doesn't just disappear.

The contractor that gets paid to build a turtle crossing buys a house, a car, eats at a restaurant, pays income taxes etc. etc. Supply-siders always want to save taxes for the rich so they can decide how to trickle it down into the economy. This is the same thing only the government decides where to spend it and, the government rarely stashes it in tax loopholes or with UBS in Switzerland.

There still is no inflation so why shouldn't the government keep printing money?
It's just paper and journal entries.

The only way to ever balance the books is to have an economic bubble of some kind that creates money out of thin air.

Or institute a one time net worth surtax, that would do it.

If you are the average guy with a low net worth and a minimum income tax rate, you should be all about government spending. If you're not you are being manipulated by the top %5.

Believe me thinking like yours scares me a lot more than any muslim extremist.

Calling to Allah, From Lower Manhattan

The Masjid Manhattan occupies a narrow basement with bare pipes snaking along the ceiling. The congregants who filled up the mosque near City Hall on Thursday night were mainly men, from South Asia, West Africa and the United States, and a few women — who prayed behind a partition. The feast provided for breaking the Ramadan fast, spicy curry over rice, came in plastic takeout containers from a nearby restaurant.

A few blocks away, at the Masjid al-Farah, the scene was somewhat different. Men and women sat together. The worshipers, devotees of the Sufi tradition of Islamic mysticism, came from an even wider array of countries and included a young man with multiple piercings and a shirt identifying him as an employee at Jivamukti Yoga. The mosque, in a two-story building sandwiched between two bars — the neon-lighted Tribeca Tavern and the nouvelle-brasserie-type Cercle Rouge — has a pristine, high-ceilinged, white-painted interior decorated with stained glass and Arabic calligraphy.

The fast-breaking meal, or iftar, included baby spinach and goat cheese and aloe vera water passed around by the mosque’s female leader, Sheikha Fariha al-Jerrahi, who declared, “Good for the digestion.”

One mosque is conservative, and the other is reputed to be among the most progressive in the city — making the downtown Muslim community a quintessentially New York combination of immigrants and native New Yorkers, traditionalists and spiritual seekers.

But what the two mosques have in common — besides the sense of celebration and camaraderie that comes at the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, in which Muslims fast from sunup to sundown, give alms and focus on self-improvement — is that both have existed for decades, largely unnoticed, blocks from the World Trade Center site.

Masjid Manhattan, on Warren Street, four blocks from ground zero, was founded in 1970. Masjid al-Farah, formerly on Mercer Street, moved to its present location on West Broadway, about 12 blocks from ground zero, in 1985. Both mosques — essentially one-room operations — routinely turn people away for lack of space.
