Is anyone else sick of the "All Williams" tennis final?

I agree with Refman that their parents are the big reason so many people dislike them. However, I also think that (for the most part) America gets tired of dynasties. That is one reason why so many people hate the Yankees, Lakers, etc. We grow tired of seeing the same thing play out over and over again. Tiger Woods is an exception, and that is only because he is a very charismatic person who has a great relationship with the media and his fans despite his overbearing father, Earl.

Yesterday, I did an all-time best in benchpress. I got 215 up with no problem and then tried 225. I got it up 9/10 of the way, and the other guys in there were willing to give it to me, but I will say that 220 is my new max. Something tells me that both Venus and Serena (especially her) could do 225 and then some 10/10 of the way!

BTW - I'm not watching the final of this; other important things are on.

 

I like male tennis. It gets a lot less attention.

 

Their parents are like an American version of Yao Ming's CBA, they are really gravy training off their daughters.

The only thing I don't like is when either of them wins, and is being interviewed, I have NEVER once heard them compliment their opponent, and that is just classless.

Of course the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Who cares??? If you're good , you're good....It's just like saying I hate how the Lakers win the championship every year! Get over it! It's going to happen in sports!

 

I have no problems with the sisters getting to the finals. I would like to see them display the same fire and passion against each other as they do against everyone else.

People like rivalries. Folks liked Lakers-Celtics, because it was always a no holds barred, all out grudge match. If the Williams sisters really got after it against each other, I believe fans would crave the opportunity to watch them play.

 

I liked the dad's recent comments in his b****fest with Capriati. He said she needed to listen to her parents more or something like that. She said he had no class. He said that she's right, he had no class, but he'd pick money over class anyday.

 

Hey Manny, I agree with you about the dynasties thing, but was there supposed to be a smiley after the last sentence? Or are you seriously talking about the same Tiger Woods that dominates the golf world as being "charismatic"? Tiger is about the most robotic, coldly efficient, un-self-revealing sports professional you can find. He's polite to the media, perhaps, but he's also said to be ruthless toward anyone -- his caddies, coaches, etc. -- who start to bring too much attention to themselves and spoiling his carefully crafted public persona.

I, too, have thought Richard Williams was a bungling, uncouth loudmouth. But any time I have ever seen Venus or Serena in interviews, they have always struck me as extremely polite, grounded, and articulate. They are gracious, and we never see from them spoiled antics like those of Martina Hingis back in the days when she was the top player.

 

It has been confirmed that Richard Williams is a first class moron.

 

I guess I should clarify a little bit with what I said earlier. I don't disagree with you, Stick, on your points above. However, I feel that Tiger Woods has this unique ability to draw other people towards him. I don't know the stats, but I would say it is a safe bet that golf's ratings have gone up a lot higher since Tiger joined the PGA tour than women's tennis has since the Williams' sisters. I am not comparing the ratings between the two; I am looking at each one individually and talking about how that individual sport has gone up or down. To me, people want to tune in to the Masters, British Open, etc. mainly to see if Tiger can win. People tune in to the big events in women's tennis to see the Williams' sisters lose and when they get to the finals...they tune out.

 

Their mother and father want to be like Al Sharpton. Both are huge assholes.

Dynasties (uless you're a fan of that team/ player) are boring. Of course the Williams sisters are talented, but that doesn't prevent their domination of the sport from being boring.

I'm also not a fan of the power-play style that is becoming the norm in ladies tennis. I prefer the crafty style of players like Hingis. Unfortunately, that doesn't cut it anymore.

I'm not a big fan of the sisters' personalities either. I could go on and on, but I'm not going to. I'd rather watch Hewit-Agassi now.

You go girlz! Nothing wrong with it. Like I would want to see Davenport in the finals. Please. She's not the best anymore. There is only one woman who will bring women's tennis to the front. We all know who it is. And we all know she isn't that good right now.

The williams sisters are doing exactly what tennis needs. They are building history. 20 years from now they will be saying nobody ever played like the williams sisters. And you will be saying it too. This is exactly what the games needs. Nobody remembers the NBA champions until Magic and Larry came around. Why, because nobody dominated. The Williams sister's dominate and they will one day will remembered for it.

 

And 20 years from now, we will all be saying that they dominated because of steroid use, yippee!!

 

What's your evidence on that charge, Manny?

 

Of course, none of the other players on the tour use steroids.

My question is: what does race have to do with who a person cheers for or don't cheer for? To me, it has nothing. People general cheer for the underdog. This is true in all sports. The Yankees are cheered against by just about every person outside of New York because they dominate the sport, period. They get criticised all the time that it is boring to see them in the World Series every year, or that their bank roll is too high and the lower market teams can't compete. Personally, I'm fine with watching the william sisters in the finals, but I think they need to understand that major championships in major sports like tennis will generate major criticism from reporters. It goes with the job to be put under the microscope. Sadly, however, the williams sisters have been conditioned to think it racism. What a joke!

 

New Jersey and Connecticut are mostly Yankees fans too.
