Lugo's done for the year. I don't think the Astros want to play Adam Everett at SS on days that Viz is needed at other positions (3B, 2B, etc.) Not a bad pickup.
I guess I should elaborate...first, I do not know what we gave up, although I doubt it was anything good. However, ANY prospects with tradeable value should go towards a starting pitcher, preferably a proven one, if not a #1 or #2. Everett wasn't doing too bad, and it's the stretch run, so Everett shouldn't be getting any time anyway. I'm just worried about the health of Hernandez, the good fortune of Munroe and Saarloos continuing, and, God forbid, the return of Mliki to the rotation.
I agree, but I read that the Astros would send two players. I hope one of them is Flash Gordon, or Jose Cruz.
Gordon is a FA after the year. And I assume you mean Nelson Cruz. There is no way Milwaukee would want Cruz. He makes a couple million a year, and sucks.
Players to be Named Later have to be in the minors at the time of the trade. As far as tradeable prospects, I would say that we won't be giving any of them up for a player of Mark Loretta's stature. I don't believe that we would've gotten anyone better than anyone we already have with what we got Loretta with.
They really dont need a 5th starter. They have a few actually. Saarloos/Munro, they can bring up Redding(not my first choice). But the Astros did purchase the contract of Jeriome Robertson of AAA. He will start Sept. 2nd.He was the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year this season with a 12-8 record and 2.55 ERA. Source: espn
Assuming we didn't give up much, this is a good pickup. The SS position is a MASH unit right now and this gives us depth. It isn't GREAT depth...but depth nonetheless.
Well, one of the players is now known: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news/ap/20020903/ap-brewers-astrostrade.html HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Astros sent minor league pitcher Wayne Franklin to Milwaukee on Tuesday as one of the two players to be named in the weekend deal for infielder Mark Loretta ADVERTISEMENT Franklin was 13-9 with a 3.12 ERA in 27 starts and two relief appearances with Triple-A New Orleans. The 28-year-old left-hander led the Pacific Coast League with 141 strikeouts.
Keith Ginter is the second player to be named according to Baseball America. We didn't give up very much.
Actually, Ginter was waived by the Astros & claimed by the Brewers before the Loretta trade. It's apparent that his waiving was pre-arranged as part of the trade, but I'm not sure why that was done.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news/ap/20020905/ap-brewers-astrostrade.html Ginter is now officially a Brewer, thus completing the Loretta trade. As I understand it (which probably aint too good), the Stros designated Ginter for assignment prior to the trade, to make space on the 40-man roster for Jeriome Robertson. A player with 4 years or more of ML service time becomes a free agent when dropped from the 40 man; a player w/ less than 4 years goes through the waiver process. If a team doesn't claim him, the player can be sent back to the minors. If he is claimed, Houston (in this case) has 10 days to: a) pull him off waivers & place him back on the 40 man ML roster; b) let him go with no compenstation; or c) make arrangements (cash or player(s)) with the claiming team.
On paper, the Brewers have to be happy with what they got for an expensive utility player like Loretta. The stats ArtV posted for Franklin were pretty impressive (could it be that he was better as a starter than a reliever?) and it wasn't long ago that Keith Ginter was tearing up the minor leagues. Of course, the Astros probably have a good handle on the long-term prospects of both of these guys, but I am very curious to see how they end up doing as pros.
I'm not happy about giving up Ginter either, but I think the Astros are content to put their future 2B hopes on Chris Burke...which judging by the season he just had in AA, seems quite foolhardy.
