The 38 yr old said she watched them die but that doesn't mean she wasn't also trying to call for help. Also you are discounting that she might've been in shock. Without knowing more I don't think you can say she was negligent.

    that's just insane.

if these are strangers, hate to sound harsh, but, if you would be putting your own life at a serious risk to try to save them, tough **** for them.

easy to play hero on a message board. and if this would seriously be your course of action, props to you. but to use the word "should" is borderline offensive. as if there is nothing else important but attempting to save some strangers life or lives. forget about your kids growing up with out a parent and the effects on the lives of all of the people who you know and love. **** happens. it's tragic, but there is no right or wrong answer to "should you save them".

Fair point. Her comment is probably regret-induced editing of her actual experience.

Regardless, it's stupid. If you don't know how to swim be wary of water, especially water that you are unfamiliar with.

It's a tragedy. But that does not mean it's not a lesson too.

If I didnt know how to swim...I sure as hell would be no where near a river. Maybe a kiddie pool that's 2 feet deep, but thats about it.

Sometimes, it takes a little brains to prevent tragedy. Lives were lost because people failed to think.

    what a tragic story.

It says they were familiar with the area, and that it was a sinkhole that took dive teams a while to find. Hard to fault the kids who tried to help their friends even if it was a foolish thing to do. Hard to fault those who stayed on shore at the same time. I expect there are lots of people who cannot swim and yet wade in water on hot days.

Don't know the logistics of a sink hole or if they got caught in current -- but man....what a tragedy.

60% of black children cannot swim. Numbers add up.

I felt bad for the family when reading this story, but now I'm starting to think the parents are to blame and should be arrested for neglect.

What kind of parents would take their kids to a dangerous situation as this when they know the kids CAN'T SWIM and they know THEY CAN'T SWIM. They didn't provide any safety precautions such as life vests when they knew they couldn't do ANYTHING if something happened.

So being the morons they are, the parents just watched the kids die like pathetic losers.. Dumbasses

6 kids died when they didn't have to.

I'm just not wired like that. If somebody's life is at stake, and I can help, then I'm going to try.

Come on guys, its a 18 ft sink hole on SHALLOW water... Imagine 6 kids playing in shallow water who can't swim which is very reasonable if the water goes up to lets say your knee/waist. They all think its very shallow water all around them. A few kids maybe steps on the sink hole and freaks out. You have their brother or sister running over to help thinking its shallow water and falls on the sink hole.

Often times those devices are more to help the rescuer. Its very difficult to swim while holding onto another individual.

Yeah, race was mentioned on the first page. There is no need to keep bringing it up.

    It just depends.

If Yao Ming was struggling in a deep body of water, I wouldn't jump in after him. Then MY life is at stake too. But if it was a 5 year old kid then yeah.

The best thing you can do is throw something for them to grab and call for help.

Lets turn it around the other way.

If you or your kids are drowning and can't swim, how would you feel if there is a good swimmer out there refusing to help because he doesn't want to?

I life-guarded for years when I was younger. That ring is located under the lifeguard stand for a reason. It is to throw to someone who is struggling, then you pull them in with the rope. Swimming out after them is a last resort becuase it is the most dangerous option.

You should do both of those things, and if there is multiple people around you would hope you could manage to have somebody call somebody throwing a rope and have a flotation device to take with you on your rescue. Of course instinct might have us jump in immediately.

    I'm black and I can't swim. I don't go in water either.
