I'm worried about re-upping with ATT really.

The contract is expensive and the service is crap.

Although it works well at my home and office, which is where I need it most.

Well you would need to jailbreak it. But there isn't a jailbreak at the current time for the iPhone 3G with 4.0 software. Once the jailbreak comes out, unlocking is a piece of cake. All you have to do is download/install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you should be good to go. I would look out for the new pwnagetool release on (blog.iphone-dev.org) and the sn0wbreeze 2.0 on (ih8sn0w.com). They'll be coming out with it shortly... the iPhone 4 jailbreak isn't too far away.

So, has enough time passed yet where I can just walk into an Apple or AT&T store and pick up an iPhone 4?

I just bought a iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 software that was jailbroken by ultrasn0w. iPhone doesn't really seem to be acting that slow with 4.0 firmware...

Did you jb? If you did, do it with multitasking enabled, and home background disabled.

It runs pretty smooth for me 90% of the time.

Sounds like I might as well go ahead and do this.

Do you have a link to the walkthrough/tutorial you used?

I did it as a clean install too.

I'm sure it would run even better without multitasking, but my phone really only slows down if i have more than 4 apps running.

Yes. As of last week Galleria stopped taking preorders. You can walk in the store and purchase one. I think Baybrook as well, but not sure of all the other Apple stores.

a quick question to all of those who pre-ordered the phone

at what point did your credit card get charged? when it shipped out to you or when you received it or when you activated it?
