After seeing the movement and the tolerance for bigotry...the views on immigration, the attacks on Obama that often accentuate his race...

I honestly think the tea baggers harbor strong racist views. I'm not even talking about not wanting to live in a predominately black neighborhood even - there's plenty of liberals uncomfortable with that notion.

I'm talking thinking they are lazier, less capable, and lower then themselves.

Based entirely on the conversations I have had at the Tea Party Patriots site, it is a small fraction that the TP is actively weeding out.

Based on conversations I've had with tea partiers here - i think they are mostly racist, but are adept enough not to say obviously racist statements.

Based on Facebook ramblings and the number of people who "like" a reference to a wingnut email that shows Obama coming out of the Gulf with the caption First tarball reaches shore, I'd say about 50% or more.

Some of the tea party folks remind me of the middle aged neighbor who's a good guy but sometimes you're talking, sharing a drink and a talk, b****ing about pot holes and the slow mailman and then before you know it he's talking about "those" people and how we need to round them all up. It's like, whoa. How'd we go from A to D here, we were just talking like regular folks a second ago and now we're rounding up the brown people. It happens just like that, crazy.

I'm probably one of the few people here that have actually been to tea party rallies. (I've been to 4 of them, one of which had over 5000 people)

Most of them arent racist (certainly not 50%). Most of it is just anger at random stuff varying from health care reform to stuff like deficit spending and the war in Afghanistan.

Honestly its just a collection of people who just pick at different issues to get mad at. Occasionally you'll find some bozo with a sign about how Obama was born in Kenya but that's pretty rare.

But no 95% of those people arent racist (or at the very least openly racist). They're just a group of people who are venting about random stuff.

Certainly not 95%. But you'd be surprised. I'm a minority and a former gf's friend of mine had a dad who was a tea partier. he was anxious to prove he wasn't racist - it was weird. Talked about how great my culture was an how hard working the people he knew of my race were and everything. But then he got tipsy later that night and it came out. He confessed you know...it's the blacks and Muslims that are the problems in america. not the Chinese and Indians. I didn't know how to react to that. I just changed the subject to sports.

I'm not surprised. I find the tea party movement to be very anti-intellectual. Even people like Ron Paul have a philosophical and intellectual consistency to them but Tea partiers are just a group of angry people who complain about completely random things, many of which are contradictory.

It's a recreation of the know-nothing party (minus the blatant racism of the know nothings) but in terms of the anger and the anti-intellectual manner of approaching policy.

Exactly, it's really quite funny they choose to distance themselves form the "intellectual elite" like all those damn hippie liberal college professors. So they purposefully tune out any intelligent conversation and just stick to random talking points like Obama is spending my child's future and big government will kill us all. The intellectuals are the limp wristers and the tree huggers, weak IOW.

It's amazingly effective, the right wing has brainwashed the idiots to believe that they are the salt of the earth and the intellectuals are out to get them, which does two things: 1) it eliminates the cognitive dissonance they have about not being more educated, you have a lot of people out there terrified of attending college and actually having to face the fact that they're not too bright and 2) It keeps them ignorant of what's really causing all of their problems.

I beleive about 25% are racist. 25% are followers who have been caught up into fear tactics. The other 50% just fans of Fox News and believe it's a honest news source.

    yeah, whatever.

Pretty soon being called a racist won't mean a damn thing because today's narratives are dumbing down it's true meaning.

    Ring around the rosies
    Pocket full of posies
    You're a racist, I'm a racist
    We all fall down.

    yeah, whatever

Except that 50% of people who are in the tea party think black people are lazy and that's why they can't get a job.
