I haven't felt this depressed over a player leaving since Warren Moon was traded.

    Sad day indeed.

Berkman was one of the best ever for this organization. I will miss him greatly.

    Speaking of Hunter...

fwiw: Randy McIlvoy(of Channel 2 sports) says Ed Wade may not be done dealing, and rumors of names include Brett Myers and Hunter Pence but unconfirmed at this point.

Curious to see which one would have more value but assume Myers being a pitcher and actually good so...

Nice, even though just a rumor about rumors.

I knew that whole excuse of JMike needing to play vs the lefty was a bunch of BS...

    Again?

His draft picks with Philly who made it to the Bigs:

    Cole Hamels
    Ryan Howard
    Chase Utley
    Pat Burrell
    Brett Myers
    Joe Saunders
    JA Happ
    Jason Michaels
    Marlon Byrd
    Nick Punto
    Ryan Madson
    Geoff Geary
    Taylor Buccholz
    Gavin Floyd
    Kameron Loe
    Kyle Kendrick
    Brad Ziegler
    Michael Bourn

That was from 1998-2005. Imagine where the Astros would be today if they'd had that kind of draft success during that time.

so. . . Lance Berkman for a middle reliever and a utility infielder with an empty average. Both of whom are probably a little overage.

I know he's aging, and he hasn't been the same this year - but I don't like that. We should've just kept him if that was all that was available.

Wade did so well on the Oswalt trade to fight his tendencies towards relievers and mediocre speedsters too.

if we trade pence that would be terrible... what the hell is the point of that i mean he is still considered a prospect in a sense right? Hell he isnt even old and i can only see him gettin better!

Melancon's stats are very worrisome from this year. His walk rate has exploded and his ERA should be well north of 5 and pushing 6 with that whip. Luckily his k rate hasn't collapsed so I will just hope this a buy low scenario and hope for the best but my expectations aren't high.

Man I hope Myers is gone, would really help me cope with the loss of Berkman for scraps

I just get the feeling these teams are dumping players they don't want on us. Why did Toronto trade a higher rated prospect for a lower rated one? Just makes me suspicious.

Earlier this week, people were saying Myers was untouchable. But if Berkman can be traded, so can Myers.

So what are the chances one of these names we traded for will be a Jeff Bagwell type of success for us?

It seems like Berkman is just a rental for the Yankees and the odds are that he re-signs with the Astros next year.

The one benefit of trading Berkman that I haven't seen mentioned is we get to get our new 1st Baseman in the lineup.

If you have guys to bring up, there is an actual benefit to clearing out space to give them their shot. People seem to forget this given the recent lack of actual prospects to give a shot. If we are going to rebuild, lets get the pieces we think we are going to be using into the lineup. Keeping Lance around blocks the further development of our shiny new A#1 prospect.

I've been listening to the radio the last couple of weeks, as I've been working out of my car some. On the one hand, people complain that we are overvaluing our old players too much when we don't trade them. People complain that McLane is too sentimentally attached to players when we don't make a trade. When we do trade them, people complain that we've traded away the players they've grown attached to, and they complain that the GM severely undervalued our players on the basis of what we've gotten back in return.

The one thing I've learned about Astros fans the last couple of weeks, is that they really like to complain about the Astros, Drayton McLane and Ed Wade. Much more than any other pro or amateur sport in Houston.

Near zero. They are not those kind of prospects. They are more mid-tier rather than top-tier.

For example, Wallace's upside is one of Bagwell's worse seasons.

Wallace's upside is Joey Votto. It is certainly well above some of Bagwell's "worst seasons", like 2006.

The problem isn't that we traded them, but the return we get. It isn't that fans like to complain. These same fans praise Morey for the amazing return he gets from stuff like McGrady's corpse. It's a matter of whether Wade and McLane are competent at running an MLB team.
