so i've been looking into getting a longboard. it would be perfect for commuting around brooklyn. thinkin' about going with bustin (brooklyn-based), loaded (bad ass designs), or erickson (made from reclaimed walnut). any longboarders here? suggestions welcome as long as you keep in mind that i'm an old man

I would get one of these, instead:

An Izip Zuma mens electric bike. Range 16-22 miles, high tech batteries, up to 20 MPH, no license required, at least in Texas, light weight for an electric bike, self-sealing tires, removable battery pack, which means you could purchase a second one, carry it with you, and double the range. Best Buy here in Oak Hill (Austin) has them for $1700.00.

I'm thinking seriously about getting one, although I'd get the step-through model. Easier on my back.

Deck: an old(er) guy like yourself with a bad back and $1700 to spend on a bike should be looking at a recumbent, instead of that gimmicky thing.

Longboards are fun....kiddies love 'em too for body surfing on the road (check for cars ;) )...but commuting? if that's what it takes to convince the wife, I suppose it's as good an excuse as any...mine just chalked up my board to more toys for the midlife crisis.

They're better then skateboards for us old guys because you can smoothly glide about without the pressure the keep up with the kiddies in the skate parks.

My cousin used a longboard to get around campus when he was at USC. He loved it. He had some special rig to strap it onto his backpack, too.

    I say go for it.
