L. Alexander: Does he WANT to stay, or WANT to leave?

I have been questioning whether Les Alexander really wants to stay here in Houston or not.

I have come to the conclusion that it is his wish to leave. Here are some reasons.

    1. He's not from Texas or the South, so he doesn't have that geographical loyalty.

    2. He may feel that by coming in and "leading" the team to the cities first major championship, and then another that he has paid any debt to the city and can now take his team where ever he pleases.

    3. Ever since he's come here, the Rockets have pulled off some big move in player personnel just about every year. First it was Drexler, then Barkley, then Pippen, then Francis. He has set the stage for a huge let down. If the team struggles and if he doesn't make something big happen, the fans around here could get real tired of it real fast. He may see the direction the team is going and come to the conclusion that the team is truly rebuilding and that it would be much easier on him to do that in another location with fewer expectations.

    4. He knows that a vote on the new arena deal is only months if not weeks away. The fans always remember what their team did last more vividly, and when they go into that voting booth, the last thing they'll remember will be the 2000 draft. Not a pretty picture. Had the Rockets moved up and picked one of the top five guys, there would've been much more optimism and (I believe) more votes for the arena deal. But, regardless of what the organization thinks of the players they drafted, the public perception is that it was a poor draft, and that it did not significantly help to improve the team over last year. Heck even Etan Thomas would've given the voters more hope. It would've at least sent a message that the organization was serious about trying to win ball games.

    ------------------------------

Now, all of this is just my perception of the events that have led up to the possibility of losing my favorite sports team. I could be totally wrong.

But, I just haven't been able to get any sort of sense of security or feeling that Mr. Alexander wants to keep the Rockets here in Houston.

If you think I'm insane, well maybe I am. But, if you think there may be some sort of method to my madness, well..... I sure hope I'm wrong. [IMG]

I know for a FACT that Les Alexander would personally prefer that the Rockets and Comets remain in Houston. He likes Houston a lot.

The arena issue is simply a business decision. Nothing more. Trust me on this one.

I think you are paranoid Dreamer. You are really stretshing on some points. Drafting Etan Thomas for more votes?

Look, if Alexander realy wanted to move, then he could do it w/o some elaborate scheme.

I'm replying b/c DREAMer gets really pissed off when his posts don't stay alive.

    Jeff,

Although I'm positive the Rockets & Comets will stay in Houston (now that is, last Nov. I would have bet $5K they were gone), I give alot of credence to DREAMer's initial premise. If anything, the fact that L. Alexander isn't from Houston only makes the issue more of a business one (which I wouldn't want as a Houstonian). Larry Miller, for example, would never have even found himself in this turmoil in dealing with the Jazz (he happens to demand owning everything, but trust me, this 70% Republican state would have built the nicest arena in the US) merely b/c his demeanor would have bled the fact that he was here to stay. It's that sort of approach which suggests an adversarial or compromistic (is that a word?) approach.
