I've been wondering for a while how much the people on this BBS appreciated what Hakeem's done for this franchise. or if they even had any respect for the guy as a person before being a basketball Legend. I keep reading those threads about everyone wanting him to retire quick so we could get on with our "Future". So he had a terrible season. he's aging, he's got health problems, but what the heck?! he wants to leave on his own terms then let him do it. Stop saying that he's slowing our rebuilding process. no matter what people say, Hakeem IS the Houston Rockets. And i'm a firm beliver that no other player will ever achieve or contribute to this franchise as much as Hakeem did...NOT EVEN FRANCIS! to tell you the truth, i wouldn't mind having him for another 5 more years. even though it hurts to see him play teh way he did last season, but i respect the guy, every Houstanian should love him for what he's gotten this city and i will be saddened by his retirment no matter when it is! just wanna start a poll to see how many faithful people exist....

what would you want Hakeem to do?

    1- Retire NOW!
2- Stay as long as he wants

And please, don't give me that (well, it depends u know) just chose 1 or 2.

    I'm a definate 2!

Definetly 2. Perhaps more for his grace off the field than on.

I choose 3 I guess for neither. I don't want him to retire now, but I don't want him to return after next season. We don't need him taking up our valuable cap space for someone like Webber. This year, his salary will count no matter what, and with Dream being a player that could help this team, I do want him to play this season. But no more. Also, he doesn't need to play longer because Hakeem needs to retire with dignity and go out as close to the top as he can, and not hanging on too long.

Hakeem is a Basketball God and should be able to pick his own time.....but staying beyond one more year would be pointless.

Two, no doubt. He took us to the promised land and the absolute least we could do would be to honor whatever decision he makes concerning his career. Big wheels can do whatever they want, and Hakeem is one of the biggest wheels ever.

Everyone seems to be lumping all arguments for why Hakeem should retire under the following: "He's taking up our cap space, he should go". Personally, for this upcoming season, I think that cap space is a dead issue. Hakeem's salary is going to impact it one way or another. My concern is this:

    Dignity.

Does Hakeem keep huffing and puffing up and down the court looking like a shell of his former dominating self? Or does he retire on the note he has left on now?

Personally, I don't particularly care. But Hakeem should. It won't play any advantage to us cap wise for Hakeem to stay or leave. We'd probably buy out a pretty big chunk of his contact anyways.

But most imporantly, the discussion about whether Hakeem should retire or not has nothing to do with what he has done for the franchise. Wanna honor Hakeem? Retire his jersey as soon as he retires. Put a statue of him in front of the [Lucrative Corporation that buys our naming rights] Arena.

But don't just decide to let the guy stay on another year as a way to honor what he's done for the city. That helps neither the Rockets nor Hakeem.

We're just saying that Hakeem's wishes should be honored.

Do I find it painful everytime Hakeem is beat downcourt, blocked, or dunked on? You bet your ass I do, and I'm sure Dream does too. But that is Hakeem's decision. If he wants to go out there and play with guys who are 10-15 years younger than him, than that's his perogative and we should let him do what he wants out of respect.

Also, instead of flaming him for staying on in his twilight years, try to keep a couple of things in mind.

    1) As said earlier, Hakeem is an old man and a mere shell of his former self. It should come as no surprise that he's not as good as he used to be. Instead of saying "Hakeem sucks" maybe we should try to cherish observing the last moments of a living legend on the court.

    2) If Hakeem hurts the Rockets, who cares?!?! The man has brought two, count them two championships to the city of Houston and I seriously doubt that being a member of an almost already lottery-bound team won't tarnish his image at all. Hell, half of you guys are for the Rockets losing anyway so we can get a higher pick, so I don't see what the problem is. And let's also bear in mind, it's not a guarantee Dream will have a negative influence. In fact, I think he will only serve to make the team better in the long run. These young guys are going to soak up a lot of tricks from Hakeem and in the immortal words of Mrs. Jones, "the more, the better."

hey ACHEBE, being a computer science student myself i laughed pretty hard when i saw your reply. it is disappointing to see that this question is even being brought up. i love hakeem and i think that he should be able to leave on whatever terms he wants to. hell the guy brought us our ONLY championships, we owe him quite a bit.

What Hakeem wants, Hakeem shall get.

    Definitely 2

But I hope for his sake that he retires after this upcoming year.
