I don't think people should read into his comments. Yao is stating what is factually true - that he doesn't know if he will be the same player. How is he suppose to know that? I think Yao will be fine, but it won't happen overnight.
this attitude and approach is so much better than last summer when that trainer for tmac was on every tv station and web outlet saying you great he was going to get him back. he still isn't recovered. I'm not worried. Sounds like realistic appraoch after a major foot surgery
Anyone who ever gets injured has questions as to whether they'll be able to be at the same level and compete in the same way they did prior to they're injury. It's not like he's pulling a T-Mac.. Yao isn't mentally weak like Tracy was.
now correct me if i am wrong, but anyone who has gone through this surgery or similar career ending foot problems had to have had some sort of self believe and confidence that he can be his original self... someone to the likes of Amare, grant hill, ilgauskas and many more... whether he can be himself or not is another story but motivation is a driving factor.
I think if there is someone that can come back from an injury...at least from a mental perspective, it would be yao...now I'm not saying he will or he won't, but I still won't ever forget when he went down in the playoffs in 08/09 and the trainers were taking hime back to the locker room and the camera guys caught him saying that he was going back in the game...
