why anyone is choosing lay up is beyond me...

I'd definitely would try to make the half-court shot.

In an arena setting, I'd take the half court shot.

But....privately...since I'm pretty much assured of making the lay-up, for $20K I probably go for that. Rephrasing the question...if you assume you'd make the layup, would you be willing to pay $20K for a shot at $5m from half court?

Which would I rather make? The half court shot obviously.

Which would I take? Still the half court shot.

I'm pretty good at the half court shot, and much like we've seen LBJ do, I can shoot it without really changing my shooting motion.

You also have to factor in embarrassment and choking. I don't make every layup with nothing on the line, just imagine with $20,000 on the line, and I would be pretty embarrassed when I missed it. The half court shot there is not embarrassment as long as you can get reasonably close to the basket, which wouldn't be a problem.

Thats a pretty low half court percentage. Unguarded you should be able to make more than that, though it seems the guy that always ends up with the opportunity would be lucky to make 1 out of 100.

I'd rather make the half-court shot for $5 million... If you're asking which shot I would rather take then it would be the layup for $20K

The "make" and "take" discussion is stupid. Obviously the OP meant "take" - as in the shot isn't guaranteed.

If it was just me and a friend, I'd rather take the layup. But if I was in a packed stadium I would rather take the half-court shot for three reasons:

    1) More money - Obviously
    2) Less pressure (I think I'd be nervous as hell with the layup in front of a huge crowd, and I'd never forgive myself for missing. But I wouldn't be nervous with the half-court shot since I'm expected to miss)
    3) I can do it - I can make about 15% of my half-court shots. Just won $100 off a friend on my 3rd attempt last week (he bet I couldn't make it in 6 attempts).

Not to be braggy, but I can make about 30% of WIDE-OPEN non-contested half-court shots.

Granted I get three attempts I would have a decent chance of making at least one. :p

Durrrrrrrrrrrr woulja rather hav $20k or $5M? Seriously, I don't even know why it was brought up at all.

Also, the pressure of making a layup in a packed arena isn't bad at all. You basically just end up zoning out the entire crowd when you are concentrating on making the layup.

HAha this thread reminds me of this hilarious video

    <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hoetF72SbEY&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hoetF72SbEY&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

BTW since I haven't played basketball at all in the last 2 years or so I would go with the layup, however if I had time to practice before the shot there is a chance I might choose the half court shot. It really just depends on how i felt and whether or not I won the lottery the night before.
