In his rookie year, and the near future, I can't see Patterson as more of a poor-man's Scola. But if he's as smart as everyone thinks he is, and pick up Scola's moves and Hayes' defense, Patterson could definitely be an star caliber PF in a few years.

Joey Dorsey's a dumbass. He'll be more like Malone. Actually, better than Malone because he'll win a championship. ;)

I'm not sure we'll use him for spacing that often, as we can also use Battier at the 4 for that. Only time he'd be favored over Battier is if there is a 4 that will overpower Battier defensively. Primarily, I think PP will be used as a change of pace energy guy. When all else fails, bring in the new guy to try to mix things up a bit. That said, I think Hill will get first shot at those moments, not to mention RA going with JJ instead.

Really, PP best shot of breaking the rotation is injury or trade forcing him in. A distinct possiblity, although I don't think Yao going down will effect his minutes. We'll rotate with Miller, Scola, and Hill. He could also seriously outplay Hill to earn minutes, but I don't see that happening either. Hill needs to play so bad that we can't play him. We'll want Hill to play to showcase for trade a bit, plus PP could probably gain more experience in the DL then Hill could get.

potentially a nice jumper and 3 pt shot, and proved to be a decent shot blocker for a power forward in college.

I want the young Robert Horry, that would take it to the whole and slam it down on anyone if you remember that far back. Not the Horry of the Lakers and especially not the Spurs.

When you talk about having a PF that could spread the floor, this guy was the ultimate and I believe Patterson could become that. With a bit more low block game.

Horry's athleticism was freakish. I don't see Patterson coming anywhere near that. I do believe Patterson will eventually develop a much more well-rounded offensive game than Horry, but I can't see him making Horry's impact during his Rockets days.

I know he never gets credit, but I honestly believe Horry was our 2nd best defender behind Dream even in his Rockets days. He could defend multiple positions, play man defense, play help defense, literally the whole package.

Never bothered stray inside the 3 point line on offense though...

At SL he was more like 'Toine except with defense.

Agreed, his athleticism was so great that he could have easily been slid to the 3 spot. But I think Patterson could become a similar version to a certain extent.

Of course Patterson is meant to bring rebounding, shot blocking, and quickness to the front court but with his ability to shot from the perimeter we should not restrict him from being the triple threat he is capable of. I don't expect him to enter this role in his first year with us but I do see him evolving into such a player.

This guy can be the most multi faceted big in the league if he works with the coaching staff as he says he will to improve. I think we got a steal at 14 with Patterson and hopefully he won't reduce himself to a role the way Shane Battier has (defensive stopper/corner 3 point shooter) he definitely had the ability to improve his ball handling and inside game but focused more on "stopping" Kobe on defense.

That's neither here nor there tho, so we'll just have to watch this youngster grow and hope for the best.

Agreed and from what I've heard/seen, Patrick could even see some time at 3 because of his versatility. It would open up Adelman's offensive strategies even more, because we can introduce all kinds of offensive sets based on other teams' defense.

When Patterson starts showing he knows the system in practice, moving well without the ball on offense, rotating like he's supposed to on defense, producing in practice, then Adelman will give him minutes.

right now nothing different or new but he adds the needed size, athleticism and skill off the bench at the PF that was missing when Carl was traded.

sadly even his writing skills are no match to Battier's

Kevin McChale did say that the coaching staff might have been asking Patterson to try certain things like hitting the 3 so they can take a look at him. Patterson will probably not do the same things in the regular season. Scola is still the most consistent player. If it's crunch time, I would rather Scola take the shots. Scola can still hit anywhere from inside the 3 line. I think Patterson can be really deadly if he can hit the 3 on a regular basis and do what we saw him do in the summer league consistently. It would be really hard to double Yao, if Patterson is going nuts hitting shots all over the court, yet also being able to drive inside with his face up game. This team already has a more balanced attack than the Tmac era when the role players were one dimensional.

I don't see him getting much playing time with all the depth at that position, but you never know. He may see some clock in second half of the season barring any injuries. I like his ability to stretch defenses and he may be one of the rockets better defenders in the frontcourt outside of Chuck Hayes.

I think its hard to say exactly what he will bring when he's on the floor bc he doesnt have a solid spot in the rotation. I think on a given night he will go in bc rick needs him to use one of his abilities. In the summer league i was most impressed by his abillity to defend the pick and roll. I have never seen a rookie big man d up a pick n roll that good in my life. He just has a great natural feel out there on defense. I like scola's quick feet when hes defending the pick n roll but he hedges too much with his body and often gets called for stupid fouls 10 feet behind the 3 point line. Patterson uses his length and quickness perfectly to hedge out and cover the passing lane to the big man with his arms. While Hayes is also a good pick n roll defender, he will sometimes just straight up switch his man. While i would love to see both him and Hill develop I have to believe that Morey has something up his sleeve, and one of them might be gone by trade deadline.

I believe Hill is more than likely out the door if he doesn't improve before the trade deadline. I really like Pat's athleticism, defensive ability, and ability to shoot the 3. He has shown is very versatile and I believe he will only continue to get better.

He has more defensive potential than Luis. Can be a very complete PF: low post defense, p&r defense, weak side defense, rebounding (good fundamentals, good body, good attitude)... Low post scoring, perimetrer shooting, ability to finish around the basket/through contact, offensive/defensive awareness, p&r game, intangibles... He has a chance to be a very sound PF, probably not excellent at nothing but very complete and versatile. And considering his head and mentality I think he will reach that potential. What I don't know is when... he's not gonna play this season, and the outlook for the next is not positive right now.

It is not pleasant to say this, but it's likely that Patterson & Hill success is not possible simultaneously.

So, he's gonna learn his scoop shot from Scola, his post defense from Hayes, and his writing skills from Battier?
