So, I just recently got my first real job as an paid intern doing some accounts payable/inventory things and was wondering how much work do you ACTUALLY do? I won't go into personal stories and experiences just yet, but for those of you that aren't self employed, do people think you do more work than you do? Also, what are some tips and words of advice while I am here at the office before I get shipped off to college again.
Be proactive and get your stuff done. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open. Keeps you out of the drama. Don't **** where you eat. This means keep yer willie out of the secretary.
What's the atmosphere in your dept. like? I don't think accounting's a stressful job. Needs a lot of diligence and can get repetitive but it's not that demanding. You'll probably do the things you're doing now if you move to another company.
The atmosphere is really relaxed. Everyone here has been working here for 4-40 years. I also wouldn't call it accounting as we do a lot of work with "Production" but it is a very diligent and repetitive job. I personally don't plan on doing this for long, just wanted something that was paid that would also give me experience in the business field. I'm hoping for something relevant next summer.
given those of us that work are always on this site posting stuff, we obviously don't do much...my first couple of jobs, I was always working, including late nights & weekends...my last couple, very easy and relaxed, makes me wonder how this company survives b/c I'm not the only one with a lot of time on my hands...
Sometimes I do very little at work, but other days I get completely engrossed in my design projects and can't pull myself away from the computer until well after the usual quitin' time. Personally I think it evens out.
My days are spent stretching about 2 hours of actual work into an 8-hour workday. There's really an art to it if it's done right.
Current assignment is 20 hours of work stretched into a 50 hour week. Last assignment was 80 hours of work stuffed into a 50-55 hour week. Oddly, I liked the last assignment better.
I feel like I've been doing this and feel bad for it, but I just can't force myself to be pushed for some odd reason. I've always been the type of person to put all I have into something but maybe there's not enough of an incentive? Corporate American culture is something that I didn't know much about, but it's actually pretty interesting to look at our culture vs efficiency vs other countries culture and their efficiencies.
Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, use the side door, and after that I just sorta space out for about an hour. I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.
Too much. I've been working on a project with 4 others that really should have 9 people on it... We recently hired 2 people, so my workload should be manageable sometime soon when they get trained and can function on their own.
Having worked my first busy season at my internship last December/January, I think I'll have to disagree with that. That said, summer's not too bad, I really don't do all that much, comparatively anyway. What eats up my time now is studying for the effing CPA exam.
He's inventing the "Jump to Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor... and it would have different CONCLUSIONS written on it that you could JUMP TO.
Unfortunately, when Im at work, there is no time for slack...maybe 2 minutes out of every hour, I can get on my phone and check out clutchfans. Always been jealous of my friends that work in a more corporate setting...show up to the office, grab some coffee and browse the net for a couple hours...do an hour of work before lunch...browse the net...do an hour or two of work before heading home.
I just hope that nobody rats out the people that honestly post here how much actual work they do...not like in the graduate cheating thread.
Yeah, that would be pretty foul. What exactly happened in that thread? I just remember it being really long and not bothering to go through all those pages.
