i still think that was a horrible call to opt out. i dont see him getting anywhere close to that, and possibly having to play 2 years to make that 15 mill back. oh well. nice problem to have.
Don't be surprised if the Spurs grossly "overpay" Jefferson. I have a strong feeling that this was a wink-wink deal for Jefferson to relieve the luxury tax stress on San Antonio this season in exchange for getting more money over a longer period. This is reminiscent of the old Rudy T/Caroll Dawson days when they made wink-wink deals with both Shandon Anderson and Maurice Taylor to sign with them for $1-2M (when their market value at the time was clearly higher) in exchange for the promise of a bigger long-term deal once the Rockets obtained Bird rights on them.
I just don't think his style of play fits in very well in San Antonio. He needs to develop his shot a bit more to adapt into the the half-court offense that the Spurs use at most times. At least he's not as big of a threat as he was in Jersey.
he should have just stayed put instead of opting out.....that would have been a lot better for him financially
If i'm the spurs I wouldn't agree to this "under the table deal". His expiring with tony parkers could be good trade bait for a new franchise player; seeing how duncan is on his last legs. Two big expirings and maybe Blair for sweetner for paul/okafor and the spurs are back for a decade. That and James Anderson should take his role in the starting lineup, and the spurs bench is stacked so jefferson really doesn't have a roll on this team
So giving how well those signings worked out for us, I assume we can count this as a win for us, or am I wrong?
The Spurs should pull a Boozer on Jefferson. Convince him to opt out with promise to sign him long term. Once he opts out, play dumb and turn the other way
