Could they? Sure they could. Will they? I have no idea. Probably not.

This team could be as good as Adelman's Sacramento teams, and they would have won a title if they didn't have world class chokers.

I don't believe like the others that you need a set formula to win it all. But what I think this team does need to take it over the top is a tighter rotation. Right now we're ridiculously deep like Orlando last year; down to roster spot 15 we've got people with playing experience and ability.

Now if we can only turn that 13-15 into 8 or 9, that's your championship team right there. The upgrade's gotta come from a non-C position, and my feeling is that the best chance we have to upgrade a spot would be at PG. Second place would be SF.

if you think this team is championship caliber, you are delusional. Our top 2 players are injury prone - proven - and our third guy we can't even agree if he should be starting or not. this is a feel good team that plays extraordinarily hard but will ultimately lack cohesiveness that comes from the repetition of playing together as a unit 4 more than 20 or 30 games wherein everyone is both healthy and performing optimally. elite talent can overcome those odds. undersized, yet overachieving talent, cannot.

Pistons also had probably one of the most clutch playoff performers in Billups. He hit big shot after big shot in the playoffs.

AB's got the ability to get to that level as he showed glimpses of that last year.

But it's still way too soon to judge AB... he will only be in his 4th year, and 2nd as the full time starter.

Oh.. and Detroit had one of the best (if not, THE BEST) defenses in the league that year. We're far from it. We'll be in the top 10 for sure though as long as Yao plays 65+ games.

I think we are one good, tall, power forward away from achieving that and even better than that team.If we have gotten Bosh, i think we are set.

That Pistons team doesn't get enough credit. They had a starting 5 made up of All Stars or borderline All Stars. Billups played out of his mind as a playmaking PG that season and Hamilton was at his peak as a sharpshooter. And they were the top defensive team of the league by far.

Yet they're mostly remembered as "the team that won the championship without having an elite player."

I don't think the 2004 Pistons could win in 2010/11. The 2004 NBA was weaker, at least the top teams were weaker.

    No.

    Billups/Hamilton > Brooks/Martin

Those Pistons are probably a better defensive team than what we'll put out this year, and their chemistry will exceed ours, given how we'll have to familiarize Yao with some new components.

I understand what your saying in the sense the we as a team are one the best all round team .. Organization ..
We might not have a big 3 and scraps .. but we have a very very big 1 and great supporting cast .. A future Hall of Fame coach .. we really have a decent shoot but it all hangs on Yao's Neck or KNEE ..

The PG position is now the weakest area in the Rockets line up. For all the hype about Brooks he is not the championship caliber PG that the Rockets need. Lowry is more suited to run the offense and defense of the starting line up. If Brooks is the starting PG the Rockets will not win the championship at all, another superstar added or not. Ya'll may bookmark this post.

Pistons won with their solid and excellent D.
These Rockets might not have the Defense level as the Pistons but they definitely have better Offense than the Pistons.

Lakers' size and length are their main advantage. No teams in the league except the Rockets can match their size and length especially now with Miller signing. Ariza and Battier proven that they can slow Kobe down. Among all teams in the Western Conference, the Rockets with a healthy Yao is the only team that can take dethrone the Lakers.

I don't think this team is very similar to the Pistons, at all. I'm not sure why Yao would not be considered a superstar if he returns to form. They are far more similar to the Kings of the early 2000s imo.

It's always fun to see people use 20/20 hindsight to judge past teams. Did anyone actually remember how the 2004 finals was judged BEFORE the Pistons won? Who gave them more than a puncher's chance to win?

Yes, comparing the current Rockets with hindsight version of the Pistons seem lacking. But in the summer before the 2003-2004 season, did anyone believe Pistons looked like future champions?

More than a decade of playoff futility has turned many of you into a bunch of skeptics. In truth, who could blame you?

Still, I believe we will see entertaining, sometimes great brand of bb by the Rockets this year. The team is stacked and talented to go all the way, providing Yao remains healthy. I know, I know, you guys are tired of these conditional words, but what can we do now?

Just enjoy the ride as the team gels from game to game. Appreciate the little things, and who knows, perhaps the bb gods will give us a break for once.
