Quit NOv. 15, 1999 after filming a short video with my friends called"Addiction"

it was about a guy who sits in his room all day smoking.

after the shoot was over, I was so disgusted from smokingso many damn cigs, I quit!

just in time to miss the Great Cigarette Price Increase of New York City.

good luck to all trying to quit, it is a tough craving to kick,
    just DONT SMOKE!!!!

I started in June or July of 1996 and smoked until January 27th, 2001. I quit at the behest of the girl I was sleeping with and have not had one since.

I used the gum for about 10 days before I realized it was just as bad as the cigarettes. The only way you're going to break an addiction is to get rid of the **** completely. So I went cold turkey from there and never looked back.

It was much easier than people say. It probably helped that I caught mono in late March and was sick for a month.

I don't miss them at all. I'm in the best shape of my life and, consequently, I look fantastic-- relatively speaking. This is extremely helpful in dating. Women seem to be more attracted to tan, fit men than pale, jittery nicotine addicts.

So my recommendation to anyone who smokes would be, quit. Because you look and smell like an idiot.

Both of my parents smoked when I was growing up and I couldn't stand it. Especially when my relatives came down and the house had a thick cloud of smoke everywhere. I guess you could say I second hand smoked for almost 20yrs until I moved out.

I will never smoke and I don't let anyone smoke in my house/car. I almost always get non-smoking when we go out (unless it is busy). I can understand why it is so hard to quit, for a lot of people it is a stress releaser and hard to do without. For me it is just a medical/economical choice not to smoke. I really don't look down on people that do and I don't mind it in movies or on TV that much.

My brother and I kinda tried to smoke once when we were like 5 and he got sick. One time at a New Years party, I had ten too many to drink and I tried to smoke a cigar and I didn't do it right. Then I upchucked. :D

Speaking of nicotine, does anyone here have a caffeine addiction? I try to buy caffeine free sodas and avoid it as much as I can, makes me to jittery.

I smoke Kools. I followed the link to that other thread and found something for Hayes and I to agree on. Kool.

Incidentally, on the girl thing, I've smoked a long time (and I'm mostly bald too -- no shaved head) and I've never had a problem attracting beautiful women. Even so, glad for you guys who've quit.

I don't smoke...cigarette smoke doesn't bother me that much...but it bugs the hell out of my wife, who has tons of allergies.

But I will say that my grandmom died of lung cancer...had she not smoked, she had a perfect bill of health...it was a painful death...she talked about how silly it was to smoke...how she was missing out on years with grandkids and great-grandkids because she choose to smoke when she was younger. really quite sad to live and die with that sort of regret.

I tried my first cigarette when I was 16, back in high school. Thought it was the coolest thing. I remember driving into the high school parking lot smoking a cigarette with the windows rolled down and rap music blasting from my old trusty '90 Cutlass Ciera. Man, I thought I was the sh*t.

Later when I came to UT, I just smoked at parties while I'm drinking beer. Last year, though, I dated a girl who liked to socially smoke, and I was totally turned off by it. After that, I didn't want to smoke ever again. Started lifting weights and getting into shape.

    Hey Refman,

at least you don't have to go out on a balcony when you smoke in a restaurant.

Nice! I used to have a kool hat. I think one of my stupid roommates stole it in college.

Another 'Kool' tidbit. When I finished graduate school I went to NYC to make some cash. Flew into Newark (ugh) and took a bus to Penn Station. Don't remember why but as we were approaching the city there was a firework display over the harbor. Knew it was just for me. Got out of the bus at Penn Station and stood there just soaking up the atmosphere. Had moved to NYC sight unseen to make my fortune. Looked up and saw the biggest lit up billboard I'd ever seen. Black and green. Kool cigarettes. Lit one up (cig not kool - don't care for menthol). Might be one of the best cigarettes I've ever had.

Yeah, I used to make merciless fun of menthol smokers. Wound up at a party one night and ran out of smokes. All that was available was Kools. Smoked em the rest of the night. Next day, I couldn't wait to get back to my Marlboro Reds, but they never tasted the same after that night. Like something was missing. I'm all about Kools now. What do you do for a living HayesStreet? Same thing you went to grad school for?

I used to. I used to always drink Coca-Cola. Then I switched to caffeine free Coca-Cola. But the evil caffeine kept calling for me, plus RC Cola was cheaper and pretty good. :D

I drank that for a while, going through a bunch of 12 packs. Then, one day I decided to drink water. Had some pretty bad headaches, but I didn't give in. Been caffeine free for about maybe 2 months. Good for me! :)

BTW, I go through a lot of water too. I think I'm just addicted to drinking. I probably go through a gallon of water every two or three days. :D

Well, it's Tuesday, and I'm still smoking. F***!

By the way, I smoke just about the weakest cigarettes possible, American Spirit Ultra Lights.

One interesting note: My grandmother was a smoker all her life, and lived to the age of 87. I guess some people are more susceptible to cancer than others. Still, I'm not going to use that as an excuse to smoke very much longer.

Naw. I own an IT recruiting company. You could say I use my graduate degree in Rhetoric but it would probably be a stretch.

I smoked cigarettes only when completely wasted while at college, probably not had more than 40 in my entire life (cigs, not packs).

One thing I have been smoking lately is the middle eastern hookah pipe (sheesha, nargile, same thing). I put tobacco in there (not weed) and smoke it when drinking liquor. It definitely gets you high. I understand that smoking the hookah for 1 hour is about the health equivalent of smoking 2 cigarettes. The nicotine and tar aren't as abundant in the tobacco, plus the water cools the smoke down so your throat doesn't feel like crap the next day. It's a great social piece for when guests are over.

Damn Jorge, let me say that you are a smart man...I had more than 40 last night.

BTW, interesting hookah bong concept. I actually had one, but my evil girlfriend has it now. Time to pull a repo on that ass:D

Yeah, okay. You may not use it at work, but it's hardly a stretch to say you use it. Trust me. Peace out, smoker man.
