I don't think he was supersonic. I'm no scientist but I'm fairly certain the aircraft's relation to a body of water has nothing to do with the egg shaped cone you see surrounding the tail. In fact, this is the same type of phenomenon that occurs on space shuttle launches once they reach certain speeds.

Number one looks pretty idiotic. Flying a plane that low over a busy lake like that is only asking for a catastrophe. Still kind of cool though.
