two pieces of evidence for your wife being correct: 1) not all bagel shops put toppings on both sides. 2) if you go into any real bagel shop and get a shmear, it's slapped on then closed and given back to you as a sandwich. i side with your wife.
Good point. But I'd guess most of the ones that do this are geared for a to-go snack ...and not a sit down.
It should be simple. Slice bagel in half. Insert bagel in toaster. Evenly glaze with cream cheese. Fold one slice. Enjoy. Fold second slice. Enjoy.* Some people don't even like toasting their bagels. I consider them infidels. *If nobody is looking, I'll dunk the bagel in my coffee. I know it's a bad habbit. =(
I was going to bring up the bagel shop angle. When you go to a bagel shop they put it back together and usually cut it in half (at least mine does, I don't live in NYC or anything). So you wouldn't pull it apart and eat it open-faced after that. But if you put the cream cheese on yourself, I don't think you have to put it back together like a sandwich. I think it just depends on whether you put on the cream cheese yourself or get it from a bagel shop.

You're BOTH right. It's just easier to eat two HALF bagels-- open-faced with Apricot Jam and plain creme cheese. In a restaurant, they just rush it to you and slap on the creme cheese. But you can have a great bagel SANDWICH for lunch or dinner: bagel, creme cheese, red onion, tomato and bacon slices. It's called a Zonker usually.
If you go to a real bagel shop (and I'm not talking about ****ing Einstein's), there's no way in hell you're getting served a bagel sandwich. That's just wrong. -a Jew
Never in my life have I witnessed someone eating a bagel as a sandwich... Never! In fact, that could only possibly work with a Lender's or some other crappy brand of grocery store bagel. Most REAL bagels would be way too thick. She is so far out of her league when it comes to bagel protocol that it's not even funny.
as a new yorker, i've had it both ways....probably thousands of times each and almost always at kosher deli's....usually in the "sandwich" form it's been with lox inside... but in any case, montreal easily has the best bagels in the world. you can't go wrong w/ either of these: http://www.fairmountbagel.com/eng/index.htm http://www.stviateurbagel.com/main/
You might be the first New Yorker I've ever encountered who prefers montreal-style bagels to NY-style bagels. They're a little sweet for me, though still tasty.
