Thinking about getting one just for the hell of it. What are your impressions of it? I'm leaning towards the Chinese clone one because it has Android OS, but still up in the air right now. Any experience with this?
I bought two, one for my wife and one for me. We took them both back because after you get over the initial cool factor, it just isn't worth the money. There aren't a ton of apps like on the iPhone and with no multitasking, it just isn't as easy to use as I thought it would be. Browsing becomes cumbersome with no tabs and it's expensive. If it cost half as much we might have kept one.
Why would you ever get a Chinese cloned iPad? I tested one about 2 weeks ago.. took about 3 whole minutes to turn the device on. It's got 1gb of internal storage (despite the advertised 64gb on the back of the device), screen quality isn't that great, it lags even when just dragging the app tray open. It's basically a medium-level smartphone cell phone in a thick (almost an inch?) 10" case. I opened with an offer of 400rmb when I realized how bad the fakepad was just to see what price they wanted. Of course their starting price was 800 rmb aka 100usd...
those fake android chinese ipads are not worth it. first off, i believe they run android 1.6 which pales in comparison to the latest firmware.
There may not be a ton of iPad specific apps, but there are quite a few and more coming every week. Although there are no specific tabs, all you have to do is press the button on the browser and you see all of your currently open web sites. I assume multi-tasking is coming in September or October when the next software version is released. I have found it very useful (please note, I am not trying to change your mind...to each, his own. I am simply relaying my experience).
That's exactly what I wanted, thanks . I want one just to have one, because I already have the latest gen MacBook Pro. I figure carrying around an iPad with my powerpoints/notes is easier in class. Also, the limited web interface in a tablet will prevent my attention from straying in class....when I'm awake that is.
With mine, I can access my home computer via VNC and my work computer via VNC through VPN, so in essence, it could replace my laptop on trips. That being said, if I needed to do a lot of actual work, I would still use a laptop, but the ability to log in to my work computer (which runs Windows) is an incredible benefit to me. I can access my Netflix account and watch movies in my instant queue which is a great benefit for my 2+ year old grandson who enjoys Thomas the Train episodes. While we were in Texas making arrangements for my father's funeral recently, it was incredibly handy for notes, checking emails, googling names and addresses and a myriad of other tasks. I have the MotionX GPS app which enables me to search for restaurants, gas stations, lodging, etc. on an easy to read screen using the 3G ability. Folks will argue that you can do all that on a smart phone, and for the most part, they would be correct, however, I like having the big screen that I can actually read.
You should have donated it to those poor r****ded kids at your wedding hotel...but then again...they probably couldnt figure it out...nevermind.
i love it. i hope the format gets fully adopted so that development continues. other than that, i don't care if people think it's useless, or overpriced, or whatever. i certainly won't try to convince them that it is a need. it's a luxury, surely, but like bobrek, i find myriad uses for it beyond the pure pleasure factor. i am kicking back on my sofa, watching the open, and attending to various "business" related stuffs as i type this. anywho, to each his own.
I have cheap, cheap Gucci bag, LV bag, Prada, Chanel, Fendi, Hermes, anything you want! Come to mee shop on Canal and Lafayette in Chinatown!!
In China . Specifically at the "everything here is cheap because it's fake" shopping center next to the subway stop at the Shanghai Technology Museum. You can buy 880gb usb sticks there too!
And this is certainly useful for on the go when one doesn't need a full-featured device, but here's my problem with the iPad: I know they are trying to change the way people use input devices, but if I wanted to take notes rapidly, it's just not going to happen on the iPad screen. I was hoping Apple would implement some sort of advanced stylus just for this reason. These are the people that made the Newton; if they developed a better, more versatile way of note-taking with the iPad, more students and professors would use them.
