oh don't be so melodramatic. The Astros are terrible right now. They may have the worst offense in franchise history, so it's no surprise the hitting coach was fired. This is baseball, these things happen. Teams are good, then they get old and then they aren't any good. Then after a while, they get good again. This will be the first time in twenty years the Astros have had consecutive losing seasons - and we might have a few more - but it will turn around with good drafting and astute use of money to fill roster space.
[rquoter] BernardoFallas #Astros OF Carlos Lee missed the workout in Pittsburgh. Unexcused absence. #hounews [/rquoter] [rquoter] alysonfooter Don't misunderstand the tweet folks...Carlos was not traded. He's not at the workout because he did not show up. Not an excused absence. [/rquoter]
This is good news if it means he's unhappy, or we can fine him. Void his contract for being fat. Then again, it could be bad news, he could become our Milton Bradley, or something bad could have happened that he just forgot to call into work.
And for that to be a possibility Drayton Needs to sell the team to an owner who won't be afraid to rebuild and who will fire Tal Smith so hard that the hill in center will flatten on it's own.
Ridiculous! God, you people who bag on McLane all the time must be too young to remember his predecessor. "He's cheap! He's an old fool! He meddles! He's just a salesman!" You've been spoiled by the franchise's success and have developed a sense of entitlement because of what Astros brought this fanbase under McLane's ownership. Get over yourselves.
Certainly - I've been one of those people b****ing about the moves the Astros have made since 2007. But there's a big gap from "franchise stupidly tried to compete after they should have realized they couldn't" to "owner is terrible and we can never be good under him". Lots of franchises go through this mess the Astros are in. They get addicted to winning at the major league level, forget about the minors, make bad moves to desperately keep winning, and then hit rock bottom. It's the result of a non-forward-looking GM, rather than some underlying disaster of a owner.
I can't get a read on Justice, he seems like the most reactionary columnist I've ever seen. The Astros right now are paying for their past sins, but truth be told the Astros have been rebuilding for a couple of years now, they just haven't blown up the major league club to do so. Early returns on the 2008 and 2009 drafts are really good, and they have been signing all their picks, and not handing out stupid long term contracts. I believe the Astros should go ahead and nuke the big league team to fully kickstart rebuilding, but it's not fair to say they are spinning their wheels like they were from 06-08. And as for joke of a franchise see Royals and Pirates, the Astros were a great franchise for Drayton's first 13 years, and they will be good again, but it will take a few more years.
It appears that the Astros tweaked the rotation at Oswalt's request. How dare they try to accomodate their players. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/7111502.html

Let me clarify things for you: Justice is a dumbass and a windbag. Now that you're up-to-speed, let me say as an aside that your Drexlerian user handle made me laugh.
damn good post. some of the best "arguing about Drayton" posts I've read on this board have come in this thread.
Indeed. John McMullen was a certified gold-plated, grade A POS SOB. McLane is simply clueless and couldn't find his butt in the dark with both hands and a flashlight. Much different.
I started this thread several days ago, before that story got published. How dare I not try to read into the future? At the time, Brad Mills was asked if the rotation move had anything to do with Roy breaking the record at home, to which he answered, "no."
The point still remains that you made a judgment on the front office's motivation that ended up being someone else's motivation. Steering clear of judging motives is always a safer bet.
But speculation and suspicion is part of the fun in these forums. What good would it be if after the Cavs signed Lowry, we all waited to guess what the Rockets would do and the motivation behind it until after we had already matched?
that's all fine; just don't complain when you get called out for your judgments being wrong. as for me, the speculation is fun but I don't enjoy the suspicion at all. I've seen enough *real* wickedness to enjoy looking for it in every sports story.
