I think Rocketsblaze hit it, Hill may never be a throw it in the post and let him go to work kind of guy. He may be more of an energy guy who looks to capitilize off of AB, Martin, and Lowry's ability to suck defenders towards them. I think the coaches want to see if he can develop a postup game but it may never be a strength. We don't need him to be a dominant scorer, we just need him to be aggressive and cleanup around the basket like he did last year. I think it's a tossup between the two.
Agreed. What Hill worries the most should be whether he is able to play in the league, and needs to show his best to the league. He is not qualified to choose where he will play.
Dunk the ball only? Well.... Haven't we at least seen a turnaround fade away jumper, spinning towards the basket, finger rolls, baby jump hooks, lay ups, face up Js have we? On D charges, blocks and some hands in the air bad rotation towards the man though
Of course I want them both to succeed as long as they are on the team. Right now, Patterson is the better player. PP can create his own shot, Hill cannot. PP has 3pt range Hill does not. Patterson has a much better feel and has more of a complete game. Hill plays ok off of others but seems to have a ways to go. So right now it's Patterson IMO. Hill needs to show more aggression and tenacity on the defensive end
you are so completely 100 percent wrong about him going to the D league. he may be traded but if he is on the team he will be playing at minimum about 15 min a game. you got a lot of thought about rockets basketball and you express your opinion about them often so you have to be wrong sometime and this is one of those times.
Both of them are very similar in terms of size. I'd say Hill has better athleticism while Patterson has a more polished game. As far as impact goes, I think Patterson has the edge right now for bigger impact of the two simply because of the more polished game and that he will be playing PF. Hill is not strong enough to really play C, so his play will suffer there. However, I think he has much better potential/upside than Patterson at either the PF or C position. I'd like to see both of them get minutes at the beginning of next season. I'd drop/trade Jeffries and Anderson for a better backup C. With that, the lineup at the start of 2010 would be: Yao / Backup C through trade / Hill / Hayes Scola / Patterson / Hill Ariza / Battier / Budinger Martin / Budinger / Taylor Brooks / Lowry I think with that lineup we can get into the second round of the playoffs. If Taylor, Hill, or Patterson step up to their potential, then we might surprise some people and get a little further. To win a championship two of our three high potential rookie/sophomores will need to miraculously step up or Morey needs to get another superstar.
Hill is not a Center. Can he learn to be one? Don't know. Right now he needs to bulk up. He would be a great weak-side defender and garbage-man clean-up guy playing along side Yao. That's where's I'd like to see him play, with Yao. From watching him play last year, Hill is a natural gamer - throw him into a live NBA game situation and you get results. He may not know exactly what he's doing out there, or why, but good things happen when you throw him out there with the real pros, as long as he's playing PF. He is completely lost right now playing C. The coaches probably realize that and are looking for a real back-up C as we speak.
I think I'll wait until Patterson gets some actual NBA game experience and then revisit this issue later.
Based off on 2 summer league games, i predict Patterson will have a bigger impact than Hill. He is just more fundamentally sound....just solid. Tremendous awareness and IQ. His team defense is awesome. His footwork is going to make him a GREAT DEFENDER. His upper body strength is unbelievable. He looks like Ron Artest already out there imo. On the other hand, Hill...i don't know what to say...he looks the same as last year...doesn't improve much. I don't like that he doesn't have a soft touch and his hook shot tend to rush even if they're wide open shot. He just doesn't appear to have great touch and i don't like that he dribble before dunking...that is going to get stripped....rather than just rise up and dunk in quickly 1 move. His mental awareness of what's going on on the court is like 1 sec late...his thought process is slow.
Hill will make the most impact this season. Patterson has long term potential to have more impact. Hill is being asked to expand his game right now and is doing things he just isn't good at. Hill should be fine when he is playing with a PG and set plays which his responsibility isn't posting up. Hill does need a lot of work on holding his position. I don't see him as shot blocker unless the Rockets play the Celtics in the finals. Hill matches up very well with Big Baby.
who cares who will have a bigger impact, lets just hope they both play hard and play well! why try and divide fans? they are both rox and thats all that matters.
There's an argument to be made for Patrick Patterson being the better player immediately after the 08-09 NCAA season. I don't think it's that unreasonable to make the same judgment now. Between the two, Patrick Patterson is a much better player. Jordan Hill could still end up having the better career. If he gets his fundamentals, footwork, and basketball IQ up to par I think most people agree he could be one of the better 4's in the league. Regardless of that, he still seems to be more raw than the freshman PP.
