Gotta second that Jenni's Noodle House recommendation. Food is awesome and cheap and the owners and workers there are as nice as anyone you'll ever meet. Our theater's about fifteen blocks from there and we're all hooked on that place. If you eat meat (I don't), there's a very cheap barbeque place one block from our theater that all meat eaters rave about. It's called Thelma's Barbeque. Got an incredible review in the Press a few weeks back.
Hotdoggin it! JCI is simply the best for hotdogs! 5 cheese coneys, no onions, a bag of Fritos, and a Large Delaware Punch. When I have my last meal, that will be it. All trips to Houston require a mandatory trip to James.
Yeah, Ninfa's has pretty much gone in the tank since the Serrano's outfit took over. I get fajitas delivered every month or so, but like you, only go to the Navigation one. Didn't know they do the Astros shuttle, I'll definitely have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip on Darband, I've driven by it a few hundred times but never stopped.
The only place under $20 is the grocery store. However, both Damian's and Carrabba's have damn good veal chops for around $25.
All this does not matter. You can get a couple of 99cent ceaser salads at Wendys and be full. God bless you Wendy's
There's a strip of Indian restaurants on Hillcroft (off Westpark), where you can get all kinds of stuff for $5 or less, and leave more than full. My favorite's Raja Sweets. Most of these places serve meat, but I'm recommending them mostly for vegetarian meals (as that's all I've had). Yesterday I got a vegetable plate (Veg. curry and lentils over rice), nan bread, a salad and two samosas for $5.50. Best deal in town. Jeff and Mrs. Jeff: If you haven't tried these guys, this is especially for you.
Batman -- Thanks for the tip, but I have a confession to make: Neither Jeff nor I like Indian food. We've tried, believe me, but when it comes to food, we are probably the two blandest people on the face of the planet. No spices, no exotic veggies ... just good old fake meat and potato meals for us.
ugh! i hate those Indian restaurants on Hillcroft... my parents would take our family to them almost every weekend when they did their indian grocery shopping down there... we always ended up eating lunch at one of those places... naturally, since i hated indian food as a child i would get some Burger King drive thru and eat it in the restaurant... man, i had no shame as a child!
Fair enough, Mrs. JB. I'm going ever so slightly off topic here, since the rule was $5 and under, but have you tried Naturally Yours Cafe on Almeda? Daily specials, home cooking style, every weekday: $5.95. All specials and soups are vegan and none of it's spicy. Best special is the spaghetti with fake beef (on Fridays). They also have the best fake chili dogs in town as well as the best fake burger (the Garvey burger -- closest thing to the diner experience in town). It's my favorite veg joint. They also serve meat, but I've heard it's best to stick to the vegetarian fare there.
I agree with mateo on Chachos. Depending on what you get you can easily eat for under $5, and they have some of the greasiest Mexican food you can find. If you've never had a chachos quesadilla, you've never had a real quesadilla.
