With all the Ming hype playing in the World Baketball Championships, many may have forgotten we have another player competing in the Worlds. That player is none other than Oscar Torres for Venezuela. With backup shooting guard being one of the Rockets question mark positions, I will be watching Torres's play with much interest. Venezuela's schedule: August 29th 7:00 PM vs. Argentina August 30th 3:30 PM vs. New Zealand August 31st 12:30 PM vs. Russia Go Oscar! FYI: former Rocket Carl Hererra will also be playing for team Venezuela.
Hmm...really? I never would have guessed that. I probably won't watch or keep up with OT, but he's ok for me at backup SG. I do hope that he does well, though. If he could get real hot in this, maybe he'll carry it over to the season.
I hope you're wrong SF. We don't have many options besides Torres at the backup 2 spot. He'll still probably see 10-15 mintues per game of action next season.
I think Torres is going to be fine. He is more than good enough to fill the backup 2 spot. He had a better rookie season than other guys that are going to be around for a long time.
Thanks for the heads up, Matador. Anyone know if any of the games are on cable? It'd be a trip to see Hererra again. Oscar looked good at times last season, then sort of disappeared. Maybe he's improved.
With four minutes left in the game Oscar has 8 points and 5 boards in 24 minutes. Venezuela's getting blown out so far and it appears unlikely that Torres will play anymore tonight. Rather unimpressive performance for Oscar. FIBA link
I think people overestimate OT's talent. I hope he proves me wrong and shows the talent to be a consistent multi-dimensional NBA player, but I just don't see much evidence for it.
Steve Francis: your Vocabulary is in need of an overhaul. Thats the most positive way I can put it, without loosing face! Nice surprise from Oscar to-day!
Yo - Steve Francis... I'm pretty sure O.T. could take you off the dribble, but you'd be doing nothing but talkin' trash anyway!!! O.T. has excellent skills!! Very few plays were called for him last year and he did pretty good in spite of that. He was probably our best defesive player besides K.T., and we all know that most pro's improve their shooting over time. O.T. just needs to be shown some love, and given some playing time!! If we don't signe another 2 guard....
I don't know if you are serious or not, but I'll answer. Oscar Torres is from Venezuela and made the Rocket's summer league last year. He did good and made the team, after preseason. He was ok at backup. In a few games he started, which was when Cat got hurt, I believe he avg about 20ppg in maybe 3 or so games. He then went back on the bench when Cat got back and never really was dominant again. Pretty good athlete, though. edit: oh yeah, he's the backup sg, if you couldn't tell from my post. He's 6'6.
Yeah, Oscar sucks so badly he shot 67% from the field, 100% from the line, had 22 points and pulled down 5 boards. Yeah, that guy REALLY sucks! I think this puts doubts of his heart and desire to rest.
I don't know how anyone could say that he sucks judging from his first year in the league. By that estimate Kobe sucks really hard. I totally agree with those of you who say that Oscar is a sufficient back up two. We don't need a good back up two considering our three guard rotation and amount of scorers. Oscar has a perfect place in the rotation to grow and mature. I think Rudy has the same idea in mind. He might turn out to be a gem in the rough, and then maybe trade foder, or the sub we need for a championship.
