With the news that Chris Bosh has opted to join the Miami Heat, the Rockets’ focus will shift to other options available, whether through free agency or beyond.

Last week, Rockets General Manage Daryl Morey indicated that if Bosh did not come to Houston, the team would pursue a trade to upgrade the front court.

“When you talk about a trade, our priorities are the same,” Morey said last week. “We’re looking for maybe a real top-end player to pair with Yao Ming.”

The Rockets could create a trade package similar to any trade package that would have been part of a sign and trade with the Raptors for Bosh. Trevor Ariza, Jordan Hill and Shane Battier may all go in a trade.

The Rockets will also now place extra emphasis on signing restricted free agents Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry. While Morey has said all along that retaining those players is a priority, either player or both could have been involved in a sign and trade for a free agent. Had Bosh become a Rocket, Scola would have been expendable. Scola and Lowry could still end up as part of a trade package. But, since Scola and Lowry are restricted free agents, the players would have to agree to the trade.

One other option is to sign a second-tier free agent big-man such as Brad Miller. The Rockets have had interest in Miller since free agency began. Miller and Rockets head coach Rick Adelman even had dinner in Chicago last week.

Wednesday, Miller’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, said, “Daryl (Morey) and I are working every day on it. We’re working on a lot of scenarios.”

Meanwhile, for one veteran Rockets player, the news that Bosh is headed to the Heat comes as no shock.

“I just heard,” said point guard Aaron Brooks. “I’m not surprised. Playing with (Dwyane) Wade, who’s a good player, seems a like good fit for him. I’m not surprised but I think we made the biggest acquisition in getting Yao back. You gotta be happy with that.”

While the Rockets are trying to improve the front court by getting bigger and adding a top-notch back-up to Yao, one current member of the roster may have a chance to take on the back-up to Yao role. Second year player Jordan Hill, 6-10, may get an opportunity to prove he can be a legitimate, consistent back-up big man.

“I feel like I can go out there and accomplish some things and help my team out in any way possible,” Hill said. “I just want to go out there and showcase what I can do and I want my team to have faith in me whenever they need me.”

Had the Rockets ended up with Bosh, it’s possible that Hill would have been part of the package going to Toronto. Hill says he was a little concerned about that possibility.

Really didn't want to start a 2nd "Plan B" thread, but thought it was much more info than Feigen gave us.

Encouraged to see we are still talking with Brad Miller's agent. And it certainly sounds like Morey has a backup trade planned.

Interesting read, Feigen hinted at doing nothing more then waiting while this article certainly gives the impression Morey will still be aggressive in acquiring help for Yao to back him up and play next to him.

Trade for Jefferson and get it over with.

Minnesota has a bunch of bigs and Rubio coming over next year so they really just need some upgrade at the wing.

Depends on the filler, but I'd take Okafor. But I admit to not knowing how terrible his contract really is.

I would much rather go get Biedrins, Randolph, and the Warriors first rounder in 2011 for Ariza, Andersen, and Chuck Hayes.

However, reality (my reality, at least) is that the Rox sign'n'trade ideas are out there waiting for a Gasol-like trade to materialize.

I would grade our offseason a B+ if we resigned Scola, Lowry and sign Miller. Then we trade for Al Jefferson without giving up anything significant.
