Yeah, who cares where LeBron will play next year. He's only the best player in the league who's about to commit his prime years to a potentially new franchise. BIG WHOOP! Far more important NBA-related things going on in the middle of July.

People never stop b****ing do they? Players never have a press conference when they sign with a new team. Its also common that players with the caliber of James, Wade and Bosh that are free agents at the same time, happen all the time in free agency. Whats the big deal? Its only one of the biggest free agent summers of all time.

I don't disagree that Lebron's decision is a massive sports story but to do an hour long televised new conference just strikes me as beyond egotistical.

Yeah, what the hell are they going to talk about for an hour?

    Possible layouts for the show:

LeBron tells us at the very begining, no one cares because it is no longer a mystery, everyone switches stations except the city he is going to.

LeBron has all the ESPN anchors guessing "Is it Miami?", "Is it Cleveland?" etc . . . while he just says, "You'll never know . . " until the last five minutes when he throws up a cloud of baby powder and tells us.

Maybe he will just take pictures of all the ESPN anchors dancing with an imaginary camera.

Hopefully he just sits down with a bunch of hats like college players. He will be sure to look extra r****ded then.

So true dude, not only that but this has been going on 2 yrs now. ESPN has had its own Lebron tracker clock on their page. The attention this dude gets is way more than deserved considering he's choked twice in a row and has no excuse for doing so. That being said the league doesn't revolved around one player and him calling this 1 hr press conf is super gay.

I remember people complaining that 610 didn't break into programing for a presser announcing the signing of Stromile Swift.

I never argued that this was not a big story. This will shape the entire NBA for the next five years. I just don't understand why he is a greeing to an hour long prime time special?

It feels like he is creating the drama, not the signing. If Chris Broussard were to come on tomorrow and with a report that he is signing wherever, guess what would be all over ESPN, and rightly so.

This is not a press conference where he takes questions from reporters or the new team is announcing him. This is a Lebron-controlled, hour-long primetime "look at me" event where he is calling the team five minutes before to create extra drama.

LeBron is the best basketball player in the world. This is huge news. I'm obviously here talking about it. I just think it is egotistical when the player himself is part of a special on ESPN where he is controlling everything. It makes him look like a jackass and it is insulting to the other teams who are not getting picked.

The sponsorship proceeds for the hour are going to a charity. IMO, that nullifies your point.

    Not really.

The money didn't matter to LeBron ever. All that fuels him is attention. He needs it like fat kids need cake, like monsters need screams, like Yao needs foot braces, like Ron Artest needs to jack up shots at inappropriate times, like flowers need pollen, like Chase needs sunblock, like Tracy needs sympathy.

Good for him for spinning something negative positively, but c'mon. Hosting a primetime special with a musical act and an opening monologue is a bit far. I hear he has Obama and Britney Spears as guests in a show that promises surprises and excitement throughout.

I think this is too much.

But does anyone have a problem with the televised national signing day or whatever?

I am not saying that ESPN has a whole lot else to cover this time of year (the Yankees aren't playing the Red Sox this weekend and that's about all the baseball they care about).

I just think giving LeBron an hour ego stroke sets a dangerous precedent. I mean think of the escalation among other giant egos. You know Favre is going to want a 3 hour comedy/variety special for his next "will he or won't he" retirement shindig.

Fortunately T.O's decline probably prevents him from getting a 3D epic directed by James Cameron.

The funny thing its actually people like you or me that created this news conference. People are obsessed on where he is going. The Media want to ask him questions for sure. Its not egotistical when people are the one giving him the attention.
