This is what I am talking about. Every year at the deadline there are a couple of players available in a firesale. We have the picks, young cheap talent, and expiring contracts to trump any other competitor. Granger, CP3, Melo, someone will be available.

You can't combine a Trade Exception with other salaries for salary matching purposes. The Rockets would need to match salaries without the TE. Of course, they could always also make a separate trade where the Rockets take back a player making up to $3M in exchange for that TE.
Al Jefferson? Would a trade for AJ for scola and filler make sense, if we slide him to the 4 and relieve yao at 5? not sure how he plays he game, but thoughts?
AJ is a better defensive player and more athletic thn scola but scola would hav to agree on the trade. I'd do it.
No, he just has to agree to it. But I don't know if we would have to give up Scola in order to get Jefferson. They already have Kevin Love, so they might value cap space and picks. Battier and Jefferies would get it done and free up $15M next summer for the Wolves. I almost think we should get an extra pick in that scenario, though. Since Minny has to really overpay free agents to come there (see Darko), that money might be valuable. This isn't a perfect trade and probably needs some tweaking, but definitely something the team should explore should they not get Bosh. Jefferson would definitely be second on my list.
I think Jefferson is due for a monster year. He was one of the best big men in basketball before he had that knee injury but those injuries take a 2 year recovery. The Rockets would be smart to steal him from Minnesota now because they wont ask for a lot in return. It wont take Scola because the whole reason they are moving AJ is because they want to open minutes at the 4/5 for Darko and Love. They would probably want a veteran wing, maybe a pick, and some cap space... Battier+Jeffries+2012 NY Pick for Al Jefferson.
I am sorry but no. Jefferson entire game is to be a down low bruiser. He has not offensive range outside of 8 ft and that is being generous. On top of that, he is a horrible passer to set up teammates. That may be more due to the talent around him than him, but still. He cannot play on the court with Yao, which means he would be a pure back up at $14 mill. That is way too much. If necessary, you get Jefferson if you know that Yao is done and and you are not signing him next year, but even though only if you cannot get someone that can adapt to a read and react offense better. He gives you the rebounding and defense you would want, but at the true C, not sure he has the lateral quickness to defend PF's. Again though, that is at a huge cost of not showing the ability to play in a team offense, and a limited offensive range.
