anyone keeping up in the war of words between the hosts of two major shows on 1300AM KVET in Austin? I always listen to the "Buck on Sports" and "Major Applewhite Show" everyday, and they've found themselves in quite the skirmish this week! It all started last Friday, when Bucky Godbolt (of the morning show) stated that Major Applewhite and Kevin Dunn (of the afternoon show) were a "couple of bobbleheads on their knees" whenever they talk about and/or interview Texas football head coach Mack Brown. Well, Applewhite shot back on his show saying that Godbolt (former RB coach under Mackovic) was just riding the coattails of the successes of Williams, Holmes, and Mitchell during the late 1990s and wasn't good enough to be retained on the staff when Brown came on board. A lot of this goes back to the fact that Mack Brown has refused to come on the morning show with Bucky and came on Major's show within the first week of its debut. In addition, Bucky and Erin (cohost of the morning show) are not Longhorn homers, something I appreciate. Yes, I am a Horns alumnus, but I hate listening to homer fans and DJs that talk about how great the Horns are and how much every other team sucks. They can't seem to get their heads out of their a$$e$ enough to be the least bit objective. The morning show guys are the only ones in Austin that are, and thus are trashed routinely by callers. I guess it doesn't help that the head coach of other Big 12 teams (i.e. OU) come on the show to be interviewed on more than a few occaisions. As for the "war of the words", callers have been calling into both shows and trashing Bucky and Erin... As an avid sports radio fan, it just upsets me that people take objectivity and rationale as "hating" Now it seems that the morning show guys were told about hornfans.com, where people have been slinging major trash about the guys... This morning they started making fun of the "geeks that chat on hornfans.com and keep each other updated on Major Applewhite's whereabouts." they were joking around and said stuff like "Hey listeners, its 6:37am and Major Applewhite just got out of the shower, go to hornfans.com and talk about it you geeks!" Its just funny that what started as a small joke has turned into a war between DJs and message board posters! Wow, that was long.
The guys on the morning show and the late afternoon show take jabs at each other quite a bit too, especially Bucky Godbolt and Brian Jones. It's funny at times, but lately has become annoying.
Bucky and Erin are by far the best two on the show...and I used to hate Erin. The afternoon guys are a complete joke. FWIW, you can pick up The Ticket in Dallas here in Austin...760AM.
Never underestimate the power of the internet. Bucky is just writing himself a bus ticket to Norman. It's safe to assume the station manager's email has been flooded with "Fire Bucky" messages. If this rift isn't solved soon, it may be over for Bucky.
actually, i think it has more to do with being controversial and boosting ratings rather than looking for a job with OU... I have no proof, but that is just my opinion.
The reason that Erin and Bucky are on in the morning is because they have the higher ratings. They are much more entertaining then the afternoon kiss ups. Mack Brown is a P$%SY !!! He should face the music, I have yet to hear a valid reason for trying to block the punt when his team was down 6 with 4+ minutes to go and the hottest QB in the country about to get the ball back. Brown is a great coach any day of the weak except Saturday. DD
Listen to them - they constantly rag on Texas. Erin, when it comes to the Longhorns, is a perrienial pessimist, and Bucky simply goes along for the ride, even though he probably knows a great deal about football. They barely even discuss sports, so calling it Sport's Radio is a misnomer. Major Applewhite's show actually talks about sports, and that's the reason he's had Mack Brown, Jack Arute, Mel Kiper, et al. on there. Frankly, I think the morning guys are a tad jealous that Major's show has had such an impressive array of guests - and they haven't.
I'm not saying he's looking for a job at OU. Just an expression he will be looking for another job other than at KVET. He is angering a lot of people who will continue to email the station manager till something is done. He may be doing it to boost ratings and be controversial, but people don't think its funny.
Having good guests doesn't mean **** if you just kiss their ass the whole time, especially when you're talking about college athletes/coaches. I think all the Austin sports shows suck though. Craig Wey (sp?) is the absolute worst though. I didn't know hornsfans.com liked Major?
i agree about Craig Way, the guy's voice just puts me to sleep... as for kissing the ass of guests, what sports talk show doesn't do that? Rome, Kornheiser, local guys, they all do it... i've reluctatnly accepted the fact that they have to do it in order to keep these guests as future contacts... i think hornsfan.com likes anything that is burnt orange, even if its a pile of s***....
yeah, E. Hogan cleared up the matter at the beginning of the show this morning, saying there was no bad blood b/t him and Bucky and Major... he said they like ripping on each other... However, a war continues to brew b/t hornfans.com and the morning guys... bucky and E contiued to rip posters at that website all morning... hmm, they're giving quite a bit of free press to those guys! anyways, it seems a group from hornfans.com is going to be heading down to Scholtz's, where the saturday pregame show will be held, and heckle and taunt the morning guys. guess we'll just have to wait and see!
Objectivity and rationale are in the eyes of the beholder. Calling someone a bobblehead, etc. doesn't sound like objectivity and rationale.
that i took as a joke... i mean that people don't think the morning guys are objective b/c they diss the UT football team from time to time... however they fail to realize they diss OU's offense all the time as well... i think they're pretty objective, with some humor thrown in to keep people awake in the mornings and to be controversial.
