It’s not yet time for Mavericks fans to breathe easy, but the negotiation to lock up Dirk Nowitzki for another four years began this morning.

Mavs’ president Donnie Nelson and Holger Geschwindner, the longtime friend/coach/consultant to Nowitzki, had an hour-long meeting at Southside near downtown. The pair were seen walking into the Southside complex at mid-morning.

No deal is done, Nelson stressed when reached after the meeting.

“This is a negotiation,’’ he said. “We’re going to meet again tomorrow [Saturday]. This was a productive meeting and we’re looking forward to getting something done. Everything is going according to form.’’

Nowitzki was not at the meeting. Neither was owner Mark Cuban. But both could be involved in Saturday’s meeting.[/rQUOTEr]

Dallas fans should be getting nervous. Especially since Rudy Gay, Paul Pierce, and Joe Johnson have already reached deals with their teams.

This is delicious. Nothing makes me happier than knocking the arrogant Dallas fans down a peg.

The Mavericks presented an offer to Dirk Nowitzki's advisor, Holger Geschwindner, on Friday and they are expected to meet with the All-Star on Saturday.

Dallas was expected to make a maximum offer to Nowitzki, which would be worth $96 million over four years.

"It was a very productive meeting. Everything seems to be progressing nicely," Mavericks president Donnie Nelson said of his meeting with Geschwindner. "We're hoping that tomorrow we'll be able to get some resolution."

Nowitzki opted out of the final year of his contract and became a free agent for the first time in his career on Wednesday night.

I wonder if the crazy woman he knocked up in Dallas is helping to push him out of that city....very interesting. I'd love it if he left for the east coast and we would only face him twice a year.

Not to mention how Dirk has been acting like an ass towards Dallas. Timeline:

"Yeah come meet me in Germany"

"No, wait, I'm coming to Dallas, get off the plane and cancel your flight"

"I want you to show me how much you really appreciate me"

"Ummmmm I don't want to arrive in Dallas to fanfare so I'm gonna just stay in NYC for a night"

"Hey Jason, yeah get to NYC and we'll have dinner"

"Hey Jason, I know you're already headed here but we're leaving, I had lunch with Nash instead"

He could have coordinated things with their GM Donnie Nelson, so that he was not boarding a plane for Germany to meet Dirk, when he finally got a call from Dirk. Also, Dirk could have told Cuban that he wanted things to remain low key, instead of all the "wine me, dine me, make me feel special" talk. He then get nervous when Cuban actually accommodates his wants. Dirk could have been decent enough to keep his word with Kidd. But, he didn't.

Dallas media up here is running crazy with it. Good stuff for us Rockets fans. I wouldn't mind it if Dirk won a ring with another team. Maybe he can go to Miami with Wade, instead of Bosh. ;)

I know Dirk will resign - but my god would I love to see him jump ship for New Jersey or some place. The Mavericks would SUCK without him. That would be soooooooooo beautiful.

and if Dirk goes to NJ , then Bosh has zero chance to make allstar starters with both amare and dirk in NY/NJ

I cant believe Bosh is going to turn down guaranteed allstar starting status with Houston just for Wade. Wow.

That's the max they can offer. 36 year old rule.
