Do most people wear the tux to the black tie weddings?

My gf's friend (not even a good friend) is getting married and we're invited. It's a black tie wedding. I think it's completely ridiculous to make your guests wear a tux to your wedding, unless you're in the wedding party. So, I have to go rent or buy a tux for a girl I barely know and never met the bf, rather than wearing my $500 custom suit I never get to wear.

Am I just being a dick about this, or do most guys feel this way?

I sympathize with you, but the bottom line is that the day is about them, and if they (more likely she) thinks having everyone being in black tie attire will make it more special, can't really argue. Gotta suck it up (or not go).

On the bright side, if you have the means to buy yourself a new tux, it's not the worst thing in the world. A tux is an important part of a guy's wardrobe anyway, IMO. :)

My girlfriend (now wife) took me to a "black tie" function here in town @ Hotel Zaza. There were definitely a lot of "who's who of Houston" type people at the party. I was NOT going to rent a tux. I wore a black, 3 button CK suit, a nice silk tie (black), a french cuff shirt with cufflinks, and some shiny black dress shoes. I fit in just perfectly. I think you'll be fine with your suit as long as it's black and you "accessorize it" properly... the cufflinks, a pocket square, etc. That stuff is not expensive, especially if you head down to K&G.

Wow... that's the gayest post I've ever written.

Since I'm going to have to spend my money on renting or buying a tux, I'm going to subtract it from the gift they would have received.... I guess if I end up buying a tux, she's going to owe me money! haha.

This all depends on whether the wedding is open-bar or not.

If so, I'll wear a damn chicken suit if I have to.

i do think it's a little crappy to make people wear tux. It may be what they want...and by them, i mean her...but you have to consider the people attending as well.

Mr. Mak, sir... that may be their way of saying: "But if I invite ghetto-ass MAK's girlfriend, who's a cheapskate and never wants to do anything for me, I might save some spots at the party... 'cuz I know they ain't gots no TUX... "

You know? Maybe this IS your test. Either do it FULLY or don't do it at all that's what she said?

I have a formal kilt, so I wear that for formal occasions. I have to say I look right sexy in that outfit.

Nice. When you have the real thing they are pretty sweet. i picked one up in scotland years back. Unfortunately i havent worn it since college. Like most, i've filled out a bit more and my waist is about 3 inches bigger than it use to be...wonder if it still fits.
