First thing I thought when I heard this is that RJ is going back to Jersey. The Russian let him know somehow that he'd sign him up if he opted out.

Damn - the Spurs lucked out again. With what Jefferson was giving them, they could easily take half the money they spent on him and find someone no one has heard of to produce that much.

...one of the ESPN chat operators noted that Jefferson could stand to make more over the life of his contract if he gets a new contract this year as opposed to after the next CBA so the Jefferson move was to get something inked NOW with so much uncertainty in the future. Makes some sense although that's a HUGE gamble if you ask me. How bad could the next CBA be?

Not sure they would have used it but doesn't this mean the Spurs now cannot use the MLE to sign a player? They could have used it and then shipped RJ off to one of the teams that inevitably will be left out of superstar bonanza and would need to fill cap space for a year leaving the Spurs with a huge trade exception. It seems like they are kind of getting screwed on this deal which, of course, I am ok with.

Jefferson is not bad for a 7 million type of player averaging 12 points a game not 15 million of course but rumors looks like he will resign with the spurs for something like 3 years/24 million just a estimate which I will take becuase he's not a bad player but just got alot of bad reps because was really hyped in the offseason and what he makes a year IMO

Eh, disregard. He opted out but he would still have a cap hold, so the Spurs could sign him at a cheaper rate and still have the MLE available.

Hes not that old, 30 yrs. He should have taken 15 Mil this season and he could have still got 3-4 years of 25-30 mil. Bad move I say unless hes already got good offer for something higher than 25-30 mil for 3-4 years.

I'm not seeing how this is a favor for the Spurs. Saying the Spurs now have money to spend because Jefferson opts out is similar to those idiots who argued throughout the year that letting T-Mac's contract would have given us 22 million to spend.

Jefferson opting out leaves the Spurs around 3-4 million under the cap room. Obviously, they will renounce the cap room in favor of having the MLE, but the Spurs are pretty much forced to use all of it on Splitter if they ever want to bring him over. The fact is that Jefferson, while not great, is a legit starting SF in the league, and the Spurs will not find anyone better then him for the LLE. Not to mention his expiring could have been valuable.

30yr old wing player who's been lousy for at least the last two seasons. I'd laugh if a team offers him more than $2M/yr

Holt looks at the Spurs tax situation and then laughs. Until this past season, Holt never paid LT. He won't have to worry about this next year.

I actually don't think it's that bad of a move for Jefferson. This year plenty of teams will end up with too much cap space and need some fillers. Even if he ends up with the full MLE for 5 years, he'll end up with...10m over 5 years than the 15m. Considering his declining play, I'd actually say he wouldn't get 10m after next year.

San Antonio has a substantial gay community. I don't think the "city" was the problem. That is, unless he wants to "play" with Golden State.
