So I will be looking around the local malls and restaurants tomorrow to check whether they are hiring or not..

However, I'm not sure what kind of jobs I will be doing, busboy? waiter? Therefore I don't know what should I put in the objective section in the resume.

I have no work experiences at all. Finished volunteer hours couple months ago.

Can any of CF members give me some advice? I appreciate it.

    P.S. I'm 17, currently in Canada.

Honestly, if you have absolutely zero actual work experience...getting that first job is a killer.

My advice is to look for hookups. Really check your friends, family etc. The first job I ever scored was based on my friend putting in a good word for me because I had no job references. Don't look for a specific job...put yourself up for anything. Make your objective vague, generic and bulls***ty (ex: I am an enthusiastic individual dedicated to trying to grow as both an individual and a team member.). Trust me, if you start specifying availabilities and specific jobs, you're not going to really get anything. You're already limited by having zero job experience, companies won't look twice if you start demanding things.

If you want to have that customized feel, send a cover letter along with your resume if you REALLY want a certain job.

You're most likely going to get some deal that involves you doing something in the back end of something-stock, dishwashing etc. It'll suck most likely. But persevere through it, get your references and keep on climbing that ladder.

Thanks for advices first of all.

I asked my friends but they don't know much about it, and even if they do, they told me not to go to the places where they are working. My dad even struggled to get a job so...

What else do I need to know besides not to seek a specified job?

When you're giving out resumes, don't just dump them and hope for a call-back. I'm telling you now, a resume with no work experience is most likely ending up in the garbage bin. Look for stores that are hiring for positions and go in, tell the employees you saw the sign, want to apply and ask to speak to the manager. This is important. Your resume to a manager will automatically be nothing more then a bloc of text telling him/her that you are under-qualified. Make a sales pitch about yourself. Show off your communication skills and enthusiasm and talk a little about what you did while volunteering and how that would help to contribute to whatever future employment.

    Never turn down an interview/opportunity.

Keep your social insurance number and direct deposit notes/void cheques handy. Any employer will require these things to hire you.

Lastly, since I'm a fellow Canuck, if you're in an area where French matters and you're bilingual, one trick I always love to pull is to switch seamlessly through both languages as you answer questions, it really is a good trick if you're somewhere in Quebec, Northern Ontario or New Brunswick.

Do I go to the store that does not post signs as well?

Will the teacher recommendation letter helps?

hmmm...my communication skill is questionable though..I guess I need to practice more.

Thanks for the much needed advice =)

-Yeah, why not. Go anywhere and everywhere you might get a job. Just don't expect the manager to come out if they're not hiring.

-Yeah, they should, as they're pretty much the only references you have.

Should be about it from me. Good luck.

you're 17. move to NYC (large percentage of single women) become a boytoy for several career women. the maternal instinct in them will keep you well-fed and well-dressed.

i think the Raptors are looking for a new PF also.

On the same note, why not be a towel or water boy for the Raps. Look what happened to JLIII.
